The phenomenon of code-switching serves as a vital linguistic marker in diverse speech communities, yet its cross-sectional variation between urban and rural contexts remains underexplored. This study addresses the gap by systematically analyzing and comparing the patterns, functions, and sociolinguistic drivers of code-switching within contrasting urban and rural speech communities, with the aim of unveiling contextual influences on bilingual language practices. The specific objectives include identifying prevalent types of code-switching in each context, examining the social functions they fulfill, and exploring the sociocultural factors that influence switching behavior. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to yield a comprehensive understanding of code-switching practices. The population comprises bilingual speakers from two demographically similar regions—one urban and one rural—each characterized by active bilingualism in a widely spoken local language and a colonial language, such as English or French. A stratified random sampling technique is used to select 150 participants (75 from each community), ensuring balanced representation across age, gender, and educational background. Data collection involves structured speech samples elicited through semi-structured interviews, recorded and transcribed for analysis, alongside ethnographic field observations.
