Thesis Abstract

The sustainability of coastal fisheries in Ghana is increasingly threatened by governance challenges, resource depletion, and socio-economic pressures, necessitating a comprehensive evaluation of cooperative management structures that influence resource utilization and community resilience. This study aims to assess the governance mechanisms and sustainability practices within the Coastal Fishermen’s Co-operative (CFC) in Ghana, with specific objectives of analyzing governance structures, evaluating resource management strategies, and identifying socio-economic factors affecting sustainability. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research adopted a case study design encompassing both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. The population comprised all registered members of the CFC, numbering approximately 350 fishermen, from which a stratified random sample of 150 members was selected to ensure representation across age, experience, and fishing zones. Data collection instruments included structured questionnaires, in-depth interview guides, and participatory observation protocols. The questionnaire items were validated through content validity and pilot testing, with reliability confirmed via Cronbach’s alpha (? = 0.82). Qualitative data from interviews and observations were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key governance and sustainability themes. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis conducted through SPSS Version 26. The study employed the Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework and the Resource Governance Theory to guide the analysis, focusing on how institutional arrangements influence sustainable resource use. Expected results suggest that effective governance structures—characterized by participatory decision-making, transparency, and accountability—positively correlate with the adoption of sustainable fishing practices. Conversely, weak enforcement of regulations and limited stakeholder engagement are anticipated to negatively impact resource sustainability. Socio-economic variables, such as income levels, access to credit, and education, are projected to significantly influence cooperative efficiency and sustainability outcomes. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing empirical insights into how governance dynamics within fishing cooperatives directly influence resource sustainability in a developing country context. It offers a nuanced understanding of localized governance practices and their socio-economic determinants, extending theoretical frameworks related to collective resource management in coastal communities. The integration of qualitative and quantitative findings aims to produce a comprehensive model illustrating the interplay between institutional governance and sustainability measures. The study concludes that strengthening governance structures, enhancing stakeholder participation, and improving socio-economic conditions are critical for promoting sustainable fishing practices within the CFC. Based on these findings, recommendations include implementing capacity-building programs for cooperative leadership, establishing transparent monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, and facilitating access to micro-credit facilities for fishermen. The study further suggests policy reforms aimed at integrating traditional governance systems with formal institutional arrangements and advocates for continuous participatory monitoring to ensure adaptive management. Future research is recommended to explore longitudinal effects of governance reforms and extend comparative analyses to other fishing communities across Ghana, thereby enriching understanding of sustainable fisheries management in similar socio-economic contexts.

Thesis Overview

This research aims to examine how well the coastal fishermen's cooperative in Ghana is managed and how sustainable its operations are. The focus is on understanding the governance structures within the cooperative—such as decision-making processes, leadership roles, and rules—and how these influence the group's ability to operate sustainably over time. Sustainability here refers to the cooperative's capacity to maintain fishery resources, support its members economically, and function effectively without causing environmental damage. The study matters because small-scale fisheries are vital for local food security and livelihoods, yet many cooperatives struggle with poor governance, resource depletion, and economic instability. There is a noticeable gap in research specifically examining how governance mechanisms affect the sustainability of fisheries cooperatives in Ghana, which this study aims to fill. The researcher will follow a step-by-step process: first, reviewing relevant literature on fisheries governance and sustainability; next, selecting a representative sample of 150 cooperative members and officials using purposive sampling; then, collecting data through structured questionnaires and interviews to gather information on governance practices, resource management, and economic performance. Additionally, field observations and document analysis will be conducted. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics to summarize the current state and multiple regression analysis to identify relationships between governance variables and sustainability outcomes. The expected findings include identifying key governance factors that support or hinder sustainability and providing evidence-based recommendations to strengthen cooperative management. The study will contribute new knowledge about the link between governance and sustainability in small-scale fisheries, offering practical insights for policymakers and cooperative leaders in Ghana. Ultimately, the research aims to promote more effective governance practices, ensuring the long-term viability of the fisheries sector, safeguarding resources for future generations, and improving the livelihoods of fishermen in Ghana.
