Thesis Abstract
The rapid proliferation of digital platforms has transformed co-operative economic activities, creating new opportunities for collaboration, resource sharing, and value creation while also posing significant governance and sustainability challenges. This research investigates how digital platform governance mechanisms influence the sustainability of co-operative enterprises, aiming to develop a comprehensive understanding of the critical factors that facilitate sustainable co-operative operations within digital environments. The specific objectives are to identify the dominant governance practices employed by digital co-operative platforms, assess their impact on economic, social, and environmental sustainability, and examine the role of key stakeholders in shaping governance outcomes. Central to this study is the hypothesis that effective digital platform governance positively correlates with enhanced sustainability across multiple dimensions of co-operative enterprises. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to provide both broad and in-depth insights. The quantitative component targets a population of 350 co-operative enterprises actively engaged in digital platform activities across three regions in the country, with a stratified random sample of 150 enterprises selected to ensure representativeness. Data collection instruments include a structured questionnaire measuring governance practices, sustainability indicators, and stakeholder engagement, validated through content validity and tested for reliability using Cronbach’s alpha. Qualitative data are gathered from 30 semi-structured interviews with co-operative leaders, platform managers, and community stakeholders, allowing for thematic analysis. The analytical framework integrates descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis to test hypotheses, and thematic analysis to interpret qualitative insights, underpinned by Principal-Agent and Stakeholder Theory frameworks. Preliminary expected findings suggest that transparent decision-making, participatory stakeholder engagement, and robust oversight mechanisms are positively associated with sustainable outcomes in co-operative digital platforms. Moreover, the study anticipates identifying potential barriers such as digital illiteracy, inadequate regulatory frameworks, and power asymmetries that hinder effective governance. The findings are expected to contribute to the existing literature by establishing empirical links between digital governance practices and sustainability in co-operative contexts, an area currently under-represented in scholarly discourse. The research advances theoretical understanding by integrating governance frameworks with sustainability models, offering new perspectives on digital transformation in co-operative economics. The study’s primary contribution lies in providing evidence-based governance strategies that co-operatives can implement to enhance sustainability and resilience in digital platforms. It also offers a framework for policymakers to develop supportive regulations that foster fair and inclusive governance practices. The main conclusion emphasizes that sound digital governance structures are critical for ensuring the long-term viability and social equity of co-operative enterprises operating within digital spaces. Based on these insights, the study recommends the adoption of participatory governance models, capacity-building initiatives for digital literacy, and policy interventions to strengthen regulatory oversight. Future research is suggested to investigate longitudinal impacts of digital governance innovations and explore comparative analyses across different sectors and regions. Ultimately, this research underscores the importance of integrating governance and sustainability principles into digital transformation strategies to promote resilient and equitable co-operative economies.
Thesis Overview
This research focuses on how digital platforms can be effectively governed within co-operative organizations to ensure their sustainability and long-term success. Co-operatives are member-owned businesses that emphasize shared benefits and democratic decision-making. As these organizations increasingly rely on digital technology to connect members, conduct transactions, and manage resources, questions arise about how to govern these platforms responsibly, transparently, and in ways that promote sustainability—meaning economic viability, social responsibility, and environmental care.
The study addresses a significant gap in knowledge about the best practices and challenges faced by co-operatives in managing digital platforms. While there is substantial research on platform governance in large tech firms or commercial organizations, little attention has been paid to co-operatives, which operate under different principles. This gap raises questions about how governance structures influence sustainability outcomes in these settings.
To explore this, the researcher will use a mixed-methods approach. First, they will conduct surveys with a sample of 150 co-operative managers and members to gather quantitative data about existing governance practices and sustainability indicators. Next, in-depth interviews with 20 key stakeholders will provide qualitative insights into governance challenges and opportunities. Data analysis will involve statistical techniques such as regression analysis to identify relationships between governance methods and sustainability measures, alongside thematic analysis of interview transcripts to understand contextual factors.
The expected contribution of the study is a theoretical and practical framework for digital platform governance tailored to co-operatives, guiding them to better manage digital tools while supporting sustainability goals. The findings aim to help co-operative leaders understand the critical governance practices needed for digital success and sustainability. Overall, the study will enhance understanding of governance mechanisms in digital co-operatives, offering valuable insights for both academic research and practical management. The anticipated outcome is a set of actionable recommendations that foster sustainable digital transformation in co-operative businesses.
