Thesis Abstract
Abstract
Hostel accommodation in higher institutions is a critical aspect of student life that significantly impacts their academic performance and overall well-being. This research project focuses on investigating the problems associated with hostel accommodation at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu State, Nigeria. The study employs a mixed-method approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey questionnaire was distributed to students residing in hostels at IMT to gather information on their experiences and challenges with hostel accommodation. Additionally, interviews were conducted with hostel managers and university officials to gain insights into the underlying issues and potential solutions. The findings of the research reveal several key problems with hostel accommodation at IMT. One major issue is the inadequate infrastructure and facilities in the hostels, such as poor sanitation, lack of electricity, and overcrowding. These conditions not only affect the living standards of students but also contribute to health and safety concerns. Another significant problem identified in the study is the high cost of hostel accommodation, which poses a financial burden on students already facing the challenges of tuition fees and other academic expenses. Many students struggle to afford hostel fees, leading to overcrowding as some are forced to seek alternative, often substandard, accommodation off-campus. Furthermore, the research highlights issues of security and safety in hostels at IMT. Students raised concerns about theft, lack of security measures, and vulnerability to intruders, which create a sense of insecurity and fear among residents. These safety concerns not only affect the well-being of students but also impact their academic focus and performance. In conclusion, the problems of hostel accommodation at IMT, Enugu State, are multifaceted and require urgent attention from university authorities and relevant stakeholders. Improving infrastructure, addressing cost challenges, enhancing security measures, and promoting student welfare are essential steps towards creating a conducive living environment for students. By addressing these issues, higher institutions can support the holistic development and academic success of their students.
