Thesis Abstract

Small retail businesses face heightened competition and increasingly discerning customers, necessitating effective strategies to foster customer retention and brand loyalty. Despite the availability of various customer relationship management approaches, many small retailers struggle to develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive loyalty programs tailored to their specific operational contexts. This study aims to design a customer loyalty program tailored for small retail businesses and evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing customer retention and sales performance. The specific objectives include identifying key drivers of customer loyalty within small retail settings, developing a loyalty scheme aligned with these drivers, and empirically assessing the program's impact on customer satisfaction, repeat business, and sales volume. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates qualitative and quantitative approaches to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the loyalty program. The qualitative phase involves semi-structured interviews with 20 retail managers and 50 customers across diverse small retail outlets in the metropolitan region, analyzed using thematic analysis to identify contextual factors and customer preferences influencing loyalty. The quantitative phase adopts a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design involving 10 small retail businesses, with a total of approximately 300 customers participating in survey assessments. A structured questionnaire measuring customer satisfaction, perceived value, loyalty intentions, and purchase frequency will be employed, with instrument validity confirmed through Cronbach’s alpha reliability testing. Data analysis will incorporate descriptive statistics to profile customer responses, coupled with inferential techniques such as multiple regression analysis and paired t-tests to evaluate the program’s impact. Regression analysis will identify significant predictors of customer loyalty, while paired t-tests will compare pre- and post-implementation measures of customer satisfaction and purchase behavior. The study will also conduct an ANOVA to analyze variation in customer response across different retail types and demographic groups. Program effectiveness will be assessed through changes in repeat purchase rates, customer satisfaction scores, and overall sales figures, supplemented by thematic insights from qualitative interviews. The anticipated findings include evidence that the tailored loyalty program significantly improves customer retention, satisfaction, and sales metrics within small retail contexts. The results are expected to reveal specific loyalty drivers—such as personalized rewards, ease of redemption, and social recognition—that resonate with small retail customers. Moreover, the study aims to establish a clear linkage between loyalty program features and customer behavioral responses, thus contributing empirical evidence to customer loyalty theory and small business marketing literature. The research also aims to elucidate practical implementation strategies, highlighting resource-efficient mechanisms suitable for small retail environments. This study contributes to existing knowledge by providing a validated, context-specific loyalty program framework for small retail businesses, addressing a notable research gap related to scalable, easy-to-implement customer retention strategies for small enterprise settings. The findings will guide retail managers in designing effective, data-informed loyalty initiatives that align with customer expectations and operational constraints. Based on the results, recommendations include adopting personalized rewards, leveraging digital technology for seamless engagement, and establishing continuous feedback mechanisms. Further research directions proposed include longitudinal studies to assess long-term impacts and exploring digital loyalty platforms tailored for small retail contexts. Overall, this research underscores the strategic importance of customized loyalty schemes in driving sustainable growth and competitive advantage for small retail enterprises.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on creating and testing a customer loyalty program specifically designed for small retail businesses. Many small retailers struggle to keep customers coming back due to stiff competition and limited marketing resources. A well-designed loyalty program can encourage repeat purchases, increase customer satisfaction, and improve overall business performance. However, there is often a lack of tailored solutions for small retail shops, which means they may not fully benefit from existing loyalty strategies developed for larger companies. The study aims to close this gap by designing a loyalty program suited to the unique needs and capacities of small retail businesses and then evaluating its effectiveness. The researcher will start by reviewing existing knowledge on customer loyalty and loyalty programs, focusing on theories such as Relationship Marketing and the Theory of Planned Behavior, which help explain why customers may choose to stay loyal. Based on this review, the researcher will design a customized loyalty program tailored for small retail settings. Data will be collected from a sample of about 100 small retail business owners and their customers, using surveys, interviews, and observation. The survey will assess customer satisfaction, loyalty levels, and attitudes before and after implementing the program. Quantitative data from surveys will be analysed using statistical techniques like regression analysis to identify factors that influence customer loyalty. Qualitative data from interviews will be analyzed thematically to gather insights into customer and retailer perceptions of the program. The combined analysis will help determine whether the loyalty program increases customer retention and improves business performance. This study is expected to contribute new knowledge on how small retail businesses can develop cost-effective and practical loyalty strategies. It will provide a tested framework for designing such programs, with clear guidelines on how they can be implemented and monitored. The main outcome will be an evidence-based loyalty program model tailored for small retail settings, along with recommendations for retailers seeking to strengthen customer relationships and grow their business.
