This study investigates how leadership styles influence employee engagement across diverse industries, addressing the problem that organizational performance hinges on nuanced interactions between managerial behavior and workforce motivation in varying contexts. The aim is to examine the differential impact of transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership on three dimensions of engagement—vigor, dedication, and absorption—while assessing whether industry context moderates these relationships. Specific objectives are to (1) quantify the prevalence of leadership styles across sectors (manufacturing, services, technology, and healthcare); (2) evaluate the direct effects of each leadership style on overall employee engagement and its three components; (3) test moderating effects of industry type on these relationships; and (4) provide evidence-based implications for leadership development programs. The study is guided by social exchange theory and the full range leadership theory (FRLT), integrating a contingency perspective to account for industry-specific dynamics. A cross-sectional research design is employed. The study anticipates that engagement will mediate part of the relationship between leadership styles and discretionary effort, suggesting indirect routes through which leaders influence performance outcomes. The contribution to knowledge lies in providing a robust, cross-industry empirical taxonomy of how leadership styles shape employee engagement, clarifying when and where certain leadership approaches are most effective. The research expands FRLT by integrating industry-specific contingencies into engagement outcomes and demonstrates the differential relevance of transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership across sectors. Practical implications include targeted leadership development curricula, with emphasis on cultivating transformational behaviors in technology and services, reinforcing contingent reward and feedback mechanisms in manufacturing, and mitigating laissez-faire tendencies in healthcare settings to improve engagement and retention. The study offers policy recommendations for organizational training bodies and human resource management to tailor leadership competencies to industry characteristics. Limitations include the cross-sectional design, potential common method bias, and regional generalizability; future work could adopt longitudinal or experimental designs, incorporate qualitative insights, and extend the analysis to small- and medium-sized enterprises.
