Despite rising global competition and the accelerating pace of technological change, small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) manufacturers in Malaysia remain unevenly equipped to implement strategic digital transformation (SDT) that aligns operational capabilities with long-term competitive objectives. This study investigates how Malaysian SME manufacturers leverage digital technologies to reconfigure value chains, operations, and customer interfaces, and to what extent such transformations influence performance outcomes. The problem addressed is the persistent gap between technology adoption and measurable strategic benefits, exacerbated by limited resources, absorptive capacity constraints, and fragmented digital ecosystems within the Malaysian SME manufacturing sector. The aim of the study is to examine the strategic deployment of digital transformation initiatives in Malaysia’s SME manufacturing firms and to identify the drivers, barriers, and organizational capabilities that underpin successful SDT. Specific objectives are (1) to map the spectrum of digital technologies adopted by SME manufacturers (e.g., IoT, cloud computing, data analytics, and digital twin) and their alignment with firm strategy; (2) to assess the relationship between digital transformation maturity and firm performance (operational efficiency, quality, and market responsiveness); (3) to evaluate the role of dynamic capabilities and organizational learning as mediators in SDT outcomes; (4) to identify governance structures, leadership styles, and collaboration patterns that enable sustainable digital initiatives; and (5) to propose a contextualized framework for achieving scalable SDT in Malaysia’s SME manufacturing sector. A mixed-methods approach is employed. The population comprises SME manufacturing firms in Malaysia with annual turnovers between RM5 million and RM100 million. A stratified random sample of 210 firms is selected across key sub-sectors (electronics, food & beverage packaging, precision engineering, and apparel). Quantitative data are gathered through a structured questionnaire administered to senior managers and digital transformation leaders, complemented by firm archival data on productivity, defect rates, lead times, and revenue growth for the preceding three years (n = 210). The instrument’s validity and reliability are established via content validity panels with academics and industry practitioners and a pilot test (Cronbach’s alpha > 0.70). The study contributes to knowledge by integrating SDT theory with dynamic capabilities and organizational learning in a Malaysian SME context, offering a parsimonious, practitioners’ framework for diagnosing, planning, and executing scalable digital transformation. It advances theory by detailing how resource constraints interact with governance structures to shape transformation outcomes in emerging economies. Policy and managerial implications include actionable guidance for developing SME-friendly digital infrastructure, fostering industry-academia collaboration, and designing targeted funding and capability-building programs to improve digital maturity across Malaysia’s SME manufacturing sector.
