Thesis Abstract

Digital transformation (DT) is increasingly seen as a strategic lever for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seeking to sustain performance amid resource constraints. This study investigates how DT adoption and integration influence SME performance, considering financial limitations, human capital constraints, and limited digital infrastructure. The aim is to quantify the relationship between DT capabilities and firm performance and to identify contextual factors that modulate this relationship. The specific objectives are (1) to assess the extent of DT adoption across operational, customer-facing, and supply chain processes in SMEs; (2) to evaluate the impact of DT on financial performance (profitability, productivity) and non-financial performance (innovative capacity, market responsiveness); (3) to examine how resource constraints (capital, skills, and IT infrastructure) constrain or enable the benefits of DT; (4) to analyze the mediating role of organizational ambidexterity and dynamic capability in the DT–performance link; and (5) to propose a resource-aware conceptual model of DT implementation for constrained SMEs. A cross-sectional survey design will be employed. The population comprises SMEs with fewer than 250 employees in manufacturing and services sectors within a metropolitan economic region. A stratified random sample of 420 SMEs will be drawn, with a target effective response of 320 completed questionnaires, ensuring representation across micro-, small-, and medium-sized firms and sectors. Data will be collected via a structured questionnaire administered to senior managers (CEOs, CFOs, ICT managers) and, where feasible, cross-validated with secondary data such as annual reports and firm records for a subset of 120 respondents. The instrument will measure DT maturity (platform use, data analytics capability, digital marketing, cloud adoption), resource constraint indicators (financial slack, IT human capital, infrastructural adequacy), and performance outcomes (financial indicators, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, market share). Validity will be established through content validity with expert panels and pilot testing (n=30), while reliability will be assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and composite reliability. Data will be analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to test complex, multi-path relationships among DT, resources, capabilities, and performance, complemented by multigroup analysis to explore sectoral differences. Mediation analyses will examine the indirect effects of dynamic capabilities and organizational ambidexterity on the DT–performance relationship, and moderation analyses will assess how resource constraints alter these effects. Descriptive statistics and covariance-based diagnostics will accompany the main inferential tests. To supplement quantitative results, thematic analysis of 20 in-depth interviews with SME leaders will be conducted to capture nuanced perspectives on implementation challenges, organizational change, and perceived value creation from DT under constraint conditions. Expected findings include (1) a positive association between higher DT maturity and improved both financial and non-financial performance, albeit with diminishing returns under severe resource constraints; (2) evidence that organizational ambidexterity and dynamic capabilities partially mediate the DT–performance link; (3) resource constraints moderating the strength of DT benefits, with greater effects in SMEs possessing higher absorptive capacity and governance mechanisms; (4) sectoral variation, with services firms deriving more rapid performance gains from customer-facing digital channels, while manufacturing firms benefit more from digitalized operations and supply chain integration. The study will contribute to knowledge by clarifying how resource constraints influence the value realization from DT in SMEs, extending the literature on digital transformation through a resource-based and dynamic capabilities lens, and offering a parsimonious, context-sensitive model for managers. The practical implications include guidance for SME leaders on prioritizing DT investments under budgetary limits, the development of targeted capability-building programs (digital skills, data governance), and policy recommendations for enabling infrastructure and affordable digital solutions. The main conclusion is that digital transformation can enhance SME performance under resource constraints, but its impact is contingent on the firm’s dynamic capabilities and organizational ambidexterity, as well as on the strategic alignment of DT initiatives with resource realities. Recommendations for practice emphasize staged DT implementation, investment in human capital, and strengthening data-driven decision-making processes to maximize value under limited resources.
