The rapid shift to remote work has accelerated due to technological advancements and global disruptions, yet its adoption by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) exhibits significant regional variation with implications for productivity, employee well-being, and competitive advantage. Despite extensive generic studies on remote work, there is limited cross-regional empirical evidence that systematically compares adoption rates, determinants, and outcomes across diverse economic contexts, regulatory environments, and infrastructural capacities. This study addresses this gap by examining how regional differences shape the adoption of remote work in SMEs and the consequent effects on performance, employee engagement, and innovation. The aim of this research is to conduct a comparative analysis of remote work adoption in SMEs Across Regions, identifying drivers, barriers, and performance implications, and to develop a regionally contextualized framework for SMEs to optimize remote work configuration. The specific objectives are (1) to quantify and compare the prevalence of remote work adoption in SMEs across three distinct regions (North America, Western Europe, and Southeast Asia); (2) to examine the influence of firm characteristics (size, sector, digital maturity) and regional factors (infrastructure, policy environment, culture) on adoption levels; (3) to assess the relationship between remote work adoption and organizational performance indicators (productivity, operational costs, turnover) using a multi-method approach; (4) to evaluate employee outcomes (job satisfaction, engagement, perceived autonomy) associated with remote work arrangements; and (5) to develop a region-sensitive framework outlining best practices for SMEs to implement remote work effectively. A mixed-methods design will be employed, combining a cross-sectional survey with semi-structured interviews. The population comprises SME leaders and employees from manufacturing, services, and knowledge-intensive sectors with up to 250 employees. A stratified random sample will yield 600 SMEs (200 per region), with a corresponding 1,800 employee respondents. Practical recommendations include region-specific investments in digital infrastructure, targeted training to raise digital literacy, development of remote-work governance frameworks, incentive structures to offset initial transition costs, and best-practice playbooks for SMEs to sustain productivity, innovation, and employee well-being across diverse regional environments.
