Thesis Abstract

The manufacturing sector in Southeast Asia has experienced rapid growth and increasing global competitiveness, yet it faces persistent challenges in fostering sustainable innovation and implementing effective leadership strategies amidst dynamic economic and technological shifts. This study aims to systematically assess the relationship between leadership strategies and innovation outcomes within manufacturing firms in the region, providing strategic insights for organizational development and policy formulation. The specific objectives include identifying prevalent leadership styles employed by managers, evaluating the extent and types of innovation adopted, analyzing the influence of leadership on innovation performance, and examining contextual factors that moderate this relationship. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative analysis with qualitative insights to ensure comprehensive understanding. The quantitative component adopts a cross-sectional survey approach, targeting a population of 250 manufacturing firms located across Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. A stratified random sampling technique selects 150 firms, ensuring representation across small, medium, and large enterprises. Data collection relies on structured questionnaires adapted from validated instruments measuring leadership styles—specifically transformational, transactional, and servant leadership—and innovation metrics including process, product, and organizational innovation. The questionnaires are subjected to validity and reliability testing, including Cronbach’s alpha and factor analysis, to ensure measurement rigor. Qualitative data are gathered through semi-structured interviews with 20 senior managers and innovation officers to deepen contextual understanding of leadership practices and innovation barriers. Data analysis employs multiple regression analysis to examine the predictive power of leadership styles on innovation outcomes, utilizing SPSS software for statistical testing, alongside thematic analysis of interview transcripts to explore moderating factors such as organizational culture and industry type. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) further investigates the mediating effects of organizational climate on the leadership-innovation nexus, grounded in transformational and contingency theories of leadership. Expected findings suggest that transformational and servant leadership styles positively influence innovation performance, particularly in fostering organizational culture conducive to technological adoption and creative problem-solving. Conversely, transactional leadership may demonstrate limited impact on innovation; however, its role in maintaining operational stability is significant. The study anticipates that contextual factors such as organizational agility and industry sector moderate the relationship, with more adaptable firms exhibiting stronger leadership-influence on innovation. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by integrating leadership theories with innovation dynamics in Southeast Asian manufacturing contexts, highlighting the importance of leadership flexibility and cultural adaptation. It provides empirical evidence for policymakers and business practitioners seeking to implement leadership development programs aimed at enhancing innovation capacity. The findings underscore the need for tailored leadership training that emphasizes transformational and servant leadership competencies aligned with regional socio-economic characteristics. The study concludes that effective leadership strategies are pivotal for Innovation in Southeast manufacturing firms, with managerial emphasis on transformational and servant styles facilitating creative initiatives and technological advancements. Recommendations include integrating leadership development into strategic organizational frameworks, fostering innovation-friendly cultures, and adopting context-specific leadership models. Future research should explore longitudinal designs to assess causal relationships over time and extend analyses to include digital transformation impacts on leadership and innovation practices in manufacturing sectors across other emerging markets.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on understanding how leadership strategies influence innovation in manufacturing companies located in Southeast Asia. Manufacturing is a vital industry for economic growth, and innovation within these firms can lead to improved productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability. However, there is limited detailed knowledge about which specific leadership styles and strategies most effectively promote innovation in this regional context. The study aims to fill this gap by examining the relationship between leadership approaches and innovative practices in manufacturing firms. The researcher will identify a sample of manufacturing firms in Southeast Asia, selecting around 50 companies that vary in size and ownership type to capture different operational contexts. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with managers and key staff members. The questionnaires will measure leadership styles—such as transformational, transactional, and servant leadership—and innovation outcomes, including new product development, process improvements, and adoption of new technologies. Interviews will provide deeper insights into leadership behaviors and organizational culture. Data analysis will involve quantitative methods such as regression analysis to determine how different leadership strategies predict levels of innovation. Qualitative data from interviews will be analyzed thematically to uncover common themes and contextual factors influencing leadership and innovation, providing richer understanding beyond numerical relationships. The study aims to contribute new knowledge by identifying which leadership strategies are most effective in promoting innovation within Southeast Asian manufacturing firms. It will offer practical recommendations for managers and policymakers seeking to foster innovative cultures through effective leadership. The anticipated outcome is a clear framework linking specific leadership behaviors with innovation success, enabling firms to adopt best practices that enhance their competitive edge and sustainability in a rapidly changing industry environment.
