Thesis Abstract
Digital transformation has become a pivotal strategic initiative for retail chains operating in coastal regions, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and improve customer satisfaction amidst increasing competition and evolving consumer expectations. Despite widespread adoption of digital technologies in retail, comprehensive empirical assessments of their impact on customer satisfaction within coastal retail contexts remain limited. This study aims to evaluate the effect of digital transformation initiatives on customer satisfaction in retail chains along coastal areas, with specific objectives to identify key digital practices influencing customer perceptions, measure the relationship between digital maturity and satisfaction levels, and propose a framework for optimizing digital strategies to foster customer loyalty. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study collected quantitative data through structured questionnaires distributed to a sample of 400 customers across five major coastal retail chains, selected via stratified random sampling to ensure representation of diverse demographic and behavioral segments. The questionnaires incorporated validated scales measuring customer satisfaction, perceptions of digital service quality, and digital engagement, adapted from existing models such as the SERVQUAL and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with 15 senior managers responsible for digital initiatives within these retail chains, providing contextual insights into digital strategy implementation. Data collection instruments were pre-tested for validity and reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.85 for quantitative scales. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression to determine the predictive power of digital transformation elements on customer satisfaction. Thematic analysis was applied to qualitative interview transcripts to identify emergent themes related to strategic challenges, customer perceptions, and implementation best practices. The study also employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the hypothesized relationships derived from the Digital Maturity Model and its influence on customer satisfaction metrics. Preliminary findings suggest that digital transformation significantly enhances customer satisfaction by improving service convenience, personalization, and engagement. Key digital practices, such as mobile app integration, personalized marketing, and self-service kiosks, demonstrate positive correlations with satisfaction ratings. The research indicates that digital maturity—comprising technological infrastructure, human capital, and customer digital literacy—is a critical predictor of positive customer outcomes, aligning with the theoretical framework based on the Diffusion of Innovation Theory and TAM. The contribution to knowledge lies in providing an empirically validated framework for coastal retail chains to strategically leverage digital transformation, emphasizing customer-centric metrics. It extends current literature by contextualizing digital impact within the specific dynamics of coastal retail environments, highlighting unique challenges and opportunities pertinent to geographic and socio-economic factors. The study also offers a practical model for retail managers to assess and enhance their digital strategies systematically. The main conclusion underscores the necessity of a holistic approach to digital transformation that integrates technological, organizational, and customer dimensions to maximize satisfaction and loyalty. Recommendations address the importance of continuous digital skill development, investment in infrastructure, and customized digital solutions tailored to coastal consumer behaviors. The study advocates for further research into longitudinal impacts of digital transformation and its implications across different retail sectors and geographic regions, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable digital innovation in retail management.
Thesis Overview
This research is focused on understanding how digital transformation affects how satisfied customers are with retail stores located along the coast. Digital transformation involves implementing new digital tools and technologies in a business, such as online shopping platforms, mobile apps, digital payment systems, and automated customer service. The aim is to see whether these changes improve or hinder customer satisfaction in retail chains operating in coastal areas, which often face unique challenges like seasonal fluctuations and remote accessibility.
The importance of this study lies in the growing reliance of retail businesses on digital technologies to attract and retain customers. Despite many businesses adopting digital solutions, there’s limited research on how these changes actually influence customer satisfaction specifically in coastal retail environments. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult for business owners and managers to know which digital strategies work best in their unique contexts.
The researcher will follow a step-by-step process. First, they will study relevant literature to understand previous findings on digital transformation and customer satisfaction. Then, they will identify a few coastal retail chains as case studies and select a sample of customers from these stores, likely around 200 to 300 respondents, using random sampling. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires focusing on customers’ experiences with digital tools and their overall satisfaction. To analyse the data, the researcher will use statistical techniques like regression analysis to identify relationships between digital transformation efforts and customer satisfaction levels.
This study will contribute new knowledge by providing specific insights into what digital practices improve customer satisfaction in coastal retail contexts. The expected outcome is to identify effective digital strategies that can be adopted by retail chains operating in these areas. Ultimately, the findings will give retail managers clearer guidance on investing in digital technologies that truly enhance customer experiences, helping these businesses be more competitive and responsive to customer needs.
