Thesis Abstract

This study addresses the critical challenge of sustaining growth and competitive advantage for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the face of rapid digital disruption and external shocks. Despite recognizing the importance of resilience for long-term viability, there is limited integrative work that links organizational resilience constructs to SME growth trajectories through digital transformation (DT) initiatives. The aim is to develop a resilience-oriented framework that explicates how SME growth is facilitated by digital capabilities, adaptive processes, and strategic leadership under uncertainty. Specific objectives are (1) to identify core resilience capabilities (anticipation, retention, diversification, and rapid learning) that interact with digital transformation enablers (digital infrastructure, data analytics capacity, and platform-based ecosystems); (2) to examine the mediating role of dynamic capability and organizational knowledge sharing in the DT-growth linkage; (3) to assess how leadership style and organizational culture influence resilience-driven DT adoption; (4) to quantify the impact of resilience-oriented DT on firm performance outcomes (sales growth, market reach, and innovation velocity); and (5) to propose a parsimonious diagnostic framework for SME managers to assess and enhance resilience during DT. The methodology adopts a mixed-methods, sequential explanatory design. The population comprises manufacturing and service SMEs in a mid-sized economy, with a sampling frame of 6,000 registered SMEs and a complementary list from regional chambers of commerce. A stratified random sample of 420 SMEs will be surveyed to obtain quantitative data, followed by 28 in-depth interviews with SME owners, chief executives, and senior managers to capture contextual nuances and validate survey findings. Data collection instruments include a structured questionnaire measuring constructs of resilience (anticipation, recovery, and adaptation), digital transformation maturity (digital presence, data analytics, cloud adoption, automation), dynamic capabilities, organizational culture, leadership, and performance outcomes. Instrument validity will be established through content validity with subject-matter experts and pilot testing (n=40). Reliability will be assessed using Cronbach’s alpha and composite reliability, with thresholds of 0.70 and above. Statistical analyses will be conducted using SmartPLS for partial least squares structural equation modeling to test the hypothesized relationships and mediation effects, while hierarchical regression will be employed for complementary robustness checks. Thematic analysis will be applied to interview transcripts, following the six-phase framework to triangulate qualitative insights with quantitative results. Key expected findings include (a) a positive association between resilience capabilities and DT maturity, which in turn enhances SME growth performance; (b) dynamic capabilities and organizational knowledge sharing mediate the resilience–growth relationship; (c) transformational and participative leadership styles, coupled with learning-oriented culture, strengthen the effect of resilience on DT adoption; (d) digital infrastructure quality and data analytics capability are significant enablers of resilience-driven growth, particularly under supply chain disruptions and demand volatility; and (e) the proposed framework demonstrates good predictive validity for firm performance across sectors, with differential effects by firm size and industry. Anticipated effect sizes are modest to moderate but statistically significant (f2 around 0.10–0.20 for key paths), with substantial variance explained in growth outcomes (R2 > 0.40). The study contributes to knowledge by integrating resilience theory with digital transformation and growth dynamics in SMEs, offering a theory-informed, practically implementable framework that links resilience capabilities to DT-enabled performance. It advances methodological rigor through a mixed-methods approach, combining PLS-SEM with thematic analysis and providing cross-validation of results. The framework extends existing theories of dynamic capabilities, organizational resilience, and DT by specifying dual pathways—anticipatory capability leading to DT maturity and adaptive capability enabling post-disruption growth—within SME contexts. Practical implications include a diagnostic tool and a managerial playbook for building resilience through targeted investments in digital infrastructure, data competencies, leadership development, and culture that supports rapid learning and collaboration. The study concludes by recommending policy and practitioner actions to foster resilience-centric DT programs, including targeted funding for digital upskilling, knowledge-sharing networks among SMEs, and governance structures that empower agile decision-making during environmental shocks.

Thesis Overview

This research investigates how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can grow and adopt digital technologies in a way that strengthens their resilience to shocks and disruptions. It addresses the gap between generic digital transformation guidance and the specific resilience needs of SMEs operating in volatile environments, where limited resources and adaptive capabilities determine survival and growth. Why it matters: SMEs are the backbone of many economies, yet many fail to sustain growth when faced with economic downturns, supply chain disruptions, or rapid technological change. A resilience-oriented framework helps SMEs align digital adoption with long-term stability, competitive advantage, and robust performance. Research problem and gap: There is substantial work on digital transformation and on organizational resilience separately, but limited integration of the two to produce a practical framework tailored for SMEs. The study aims to theorize and test a model that links digital capabilities, organizational resilience constructs (flexibility, redundancy, learning, and risk management), and growth outcomes. What the researcher will do step by step: - Phase 1: Literature synthesis to define constructs, identify relevant theories (for example, Dynamic Capabilities Theory and Resource-Based View), and develop a preliminary resilience-oriented framework. - Phase 2: Research design and instrument development, including a survey instrument for SME leaders and semi-structured interview guides to capture depth. - Phase 3: Data collection from a sample of 250 SMEs across manufacturing and services sectors, using online surveys and follow-up interviews with 30 respondents to enrich context. - Phase 4: Data analysis using confirmatory factor analysis to validate measurement models, multiple regression to test relationships among digital capabilities, resilience factors, and growth outcomes, and thematic analysis for qualitative data. - Phase 5: Model refinement and cross-validation with a subset of firms, followed by synthesis of findings into a practical framework with implementation guidelines. Expected contribution: The study will produce a validated, actionable framework that integrates digital transformation with organizational resilience in SMEs, clarifying which digital capabilities most effectively build resilience and growth. It will advance theory by combining Dynamic Capabilities and resilience perspectives into a coherent SME-focused model and offer practical checklists and steps for managers. Anticipated outcomes: Clear evidence that specific combinations of digital capabilities (e.g., cloud-based collaboration, data analytics, cybersecurity) enhance resilience dimensions and drive measurable growth indicators (revenue growth, market diversification). Recommendations will include sector-specific pathways and governance practices to sustain transformation and resilience over time.
