Thesis Abstract

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) form the backbone of economic development, yet they face significant vulnerabilities to environmental, financial, and operational disruptions that threaten their sustainability. This study addresses the critical gap in understanding how SMEs can develop and operationalize resilience frameworks to withstand such challenges. The primary aim is to develop, validate, and present an integrative framework that enhances organizational resilience specific to SMEs operating under volatile conditions. The research objectives include (1) identifying key internal and external factors that influence resilience in SMEs; (2) examining the applicability of existing resilience theories, such as the Dynamic Capabilities Theory and the Resource-Based View, within the SME context; (3) empirically testing the relationships between resilience determinants and SME performance during disruptions; and (4) constructing a comprehensive resilience framework tailored to SMEs, supported by empirical findings. This study adopts a mixed-methods research design, integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches to gain a holistic understanding of resilience practices. The quantitative phase involves a cross-sectional survey of 350 SMEs selected via stratified random sampling across manufacturing and service sectors within the country. Data are collected through structured questionnaires, validated through pilot testing and expert review, ensuring content validity and reliability (Cronbach’s alpha above 0.80). Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using AMOS is employed to analyze the data, facilitating the examination of complex relationships among resilience determinants, organizational characteristics, and performance metrics. The qualitative component comprises semi-structured interviews with 20 SME managers, analyzed through thematic analysis to derive contextual insights and validate the quantitative findings. Expected results indicate significant positive relationships between organizational learning capabilities, leadership resilience, financial flexibility, and overall organizational resilience. The analysis is anticipated to reveal that SMEs employing proactive risk management and adaptive strategies demonstrate higher resilience levels, leading to improved performance amid disruptions. The emergent resilience framework is expected to underscore the importance of dynamic resource mobilization, strategic agility, and stakeholder engagement in cultivating resilience. This research contributes novel insights to the existing body of knowledge by operationalizing resilience constructs specific to SMEs and integrating them into a validated theoretical framework. It extends the applicability of the Dynamic Capabilities Theory and the Resource-Based View by contextualizing these theories within the SME sector, highlighting how internal capabilities and external relationships foster resilience. Policymakers, practitioners, and SME support organizations can utilize this framework to design targeted interventions aimed at resilience building. The main conclusion underscores that resilient SMEs are characterized by adaptive leadership, flexible resource management, and strategic agility, which collectively buffer against adverse environmental shocks. Based on these findings, the study recommends the development of resilience training programs, the promotion of innovation and flexible financing options, and the establishment of collaborative networks to foster resilience. Future research could explore longitudinal designs to assess resilience evolution over time and extend the framework to other regional or sectoral contexts, enriching the understanding of resilience dynamics across diverse SME environments.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on developing a practical framework to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) become more resilient to challenges and disruptions. Organizational resilience refers to a company's ability to adapt, recover, and thrive despite adverse conditions such as economic downturns, natural disasters, or unexpected market changes. This topic is important because SMEs are often more vulnerable to such disruptions due to limited resources and less robust risk management systems. Despite the crucial role that resilience plays in the survival and growth of SMEs, there is a gap in understanding of the specific factors and strategies that contribute to building resilience within these businesses, especially in the context of emerging economies where many SMEs operate. The researcher will begin by reviewing existing theories and models related to organizational resilience and small business management, including the Adaptive Capacity Theory and Resource-Based View. Next, a qualitative and quantitative research approach will be adopted. The study will target a population of approximately 150 SMEs in a defined geographic area, selected through stratified random sampling. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and document analysis, focusing on resilient practices, organizational resources, leadership styles, and external factors influencing resilience. To analyze the data, the researcher will use descriptive statistics to summarize the information, and multiple regression analysis to identify the key predictors of resilience. Thematic analysis will be applied to qualitative interview data for deeper insights. The expected outcome of the research is a validated framework outlining the key elements and strategies necessary for SMEs to enhance resilience. This framework aims to serve as a practical guide for SME managers, policymakers, and support organizations. The contribution of this study lies in filling the knowledge gap about resilience-building in SMEs and providing a context-specific, actionable model. Ultimately, the study will recommend ways to strengthen SMEs’ capacity to withstand future shocks, thus supporting their long-term sustainability and growth.
