Thesis Abstract

In the contemporary business environment, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) face increasing pressure to balance economic growth with environmental and social sustainability, yet many struggle to effectively integrate sustainable practices into their core growth strategies. This study addresses the persistent gap between the recognition of sustainability's importance and its practical implementation within small business frameworks, with the aim of developing a comprehensive and contextually relevant framework to facilitate the integration of sustainable practices into small business growth strategies. The specific objectives include (1) to examine the existing knowledge and practices of sustainability among small businesses; (2) to identify key drivers and barriers to sustainable integration; (3) to develop a theoretical model that illustrates the relationship between sustainable practices and business growth; and (4) to empirically validate this model within a targeted business environment. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative designs to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The qualitative phase involves semi-structured interviews with 30 small business owners across diverse sectors to explore perceptions, motivations, and challenges related to sustainability implementation. The quantitative phase employs a structured survey distributed to 350 small business owners selected through stratified random sampling from a regional business registry, aiming to quantify the relationships among variables identified in the qualitative study. Data collection instruments include interview guides validated through expert review and a structured questionnaire tested for validity and reliability via pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.80. Data analysis proceeds using thematic analysis for qualitative data, facilitated by NVivo, to identify emergent themes related to sustainable practices and growth strategies. Quantitative data are analyzed through multiple regression analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS software to assess the strength and significance of hypothesized relationships within the proposed framework. The analytical process aims to test the theoretical model based on the resource-based view (RBV) and stakeholder theory, positing that sustainable practices serve as strategic resources that influence growth outcomes. Expected findings suggest that small businesses are increasingly optimistic about sustainability’s potential to enhance competitive advantage; however, significant barriers such as limited resources, lack of technical expertise, and regulatory uncertainties hinder adoption. The developed framework is anticipated to elucidate the mechanisms through which sustainable practices—such as eco-efficient operations, social responsibility initiatives, and transparent reporting—contribute to strategic growth, including market expansion and customer loyalty. Empirical validation is expected to demonstrate that sustainable practices positively impact small business growth, mediated by perceived organizational legitimacy and stakeholder engagement. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by integrating sustainability considerations into small business growth models, offering a tailored framework that aligns sustainability initiatives with strategic objectives. It advances theoretical understanding by empirically testing the applicability of RBV and stakeholder theory within a small business context, specifically in developing regions. Practically, the framework provides small business managers with an evidence-based guideline for embedding sustainability into growth plans, potentially fostering more resilient and competitive enterprises. The main conclusion underscores that sustainable practices are not only ethically imperative but also strategically advantageous for small businesses. The study recommends policy measures to incentivize sustainability adoption, enhanced access to technical assistance, and targeted training programs aimed at building capacity for sustainability integration. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts of sustainability strategies and adapt the framework across different geographic and sectoral contexts to enhance its generalizability and practical relevance.

Thesis Overview

This research focuses on developing a practical framework to help small businesses incorporate sustainable practices into their growth strategies. Many small businesses recognize the importance of sustainability for long-term success, but they often lack clear guidance or structured models to integrate environmental, social, and economic sustainability into their daily operations and expansion plans. The study aims to bridge this gap by identifying the key factors and best practices that enable small businesses to grow sustainably. The researcher will begin by reviewing existing literature on sustainability in small business growth and identifying gaps or shortcomings in current models. Next, they will conduct qualitative interviews with small business owners and managers to understand how sustainability is currently being managed and integrated. Alongside this, a survey will be distributed to a larger sample, possibly 150 to 200 small businesses, to gather quantitative data on the common practices and barriers faced. The data collected will be analyzed using thematic analysis for qualitative responses and regression analysis to determine the relationships between sustainability practices and growth outcomes. The ultimate goal is to develop a comprehensive, easy-to-apply framework that small business owners can use to embed sustainability into their growth strategies effectively. This framework will distill best practices, critical success factors, and common challenges, providing clear guidance on how sustainability can enhance business growth rather than hinder it. The study’s contribution to knowledge lies in its integrated approach, combining empirical insights with theoretical understanding, and translating these into a usable framework tailored for small businesses. The expected outcome is a set of practical guidelines and a conceptual model that can be tested and refined in future research or adapted by small business practitioners. This research hopes to demonstrate that sustainability, when properly integrated, can be a driver of business growth and competitive advantage for small businesses.
