This project aims to study the effects of different plant root exudates on soil water retention. Plant roots release a variety of organic compounds into the soil, collectively known as root exudates, which can influence soil physical properties and water dynamics. Understanding the specific effects of different root exudates on soil water retention is crucial for optimizing irrigation practices and improving water use efficiency in agriculture. In this study, we will conduct laboratory experiments using soil columns and selected plant species to investigate the effects of different root exudates on soil water holding capacity, infiltration rates, and water distribution patterns. We will measure relevant soil physical properties and analyze the chemical composition of root exudates. Additionally, we will assess the impact of root exudates on soil microbial communities and their potential role in mediating water retention. The findings from this study will contribute to our understanding of the interactions between plants, soil, and water and provide insights into sustainable water management strategies.
