Thesis Abstract

The rapid integration of digital media into art education has transformed traditional pedagogical approaches, raising critical questions regarding its impact on the development of students' creative skills. This study investigates how digital media tools influence creative skill acquisition among high school art students, aiming to provide empirical evidence on the role of technology-enhanced learning in fostering creativity. The specific objectives include (1) to examine students’ attitudes toward digital media integration in art classes; (2) to assess the extent to which digital media enhances specific creative skills such as visual composition, innovation, and technical execution; and (3) to explore pedagogical strategies that effectively leverage digital media for creative development. Guided by the Cognitive Constructivist Theory and the Creative Process Theory, the study adopts a mixed-methods research design to facilitate comprehensive insights. For the quantitative aspect, a cross-sectional survey was conducted with 250 art students from eight randomly selected secondary schools in the region. Data collection involved the administration of a structured questionnaire measuring students’ engagement with digital media and self-assessed creative skills. To complement this, qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with ten art teachers who incorporate digital media in their curricula. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis to determine relationships and predictive effects of digital media use on creative skills. Thematic analysis was employed to interpret qualitative interview data, identifying recurring pedagogical practices and perceptions. It is anticipated that results will reveal a significant positive correlation between digital media integration and the enhancement of creative skills, with particular emphasis on visual innovation and technical proficiency. The regression analysis is expected to demonstrate digital media's substantial predictive capacity regarding creative skill development, supporting the hypothesis that technology-enriched art education environments foster greater artistic creativity compared to traditional methods. The qualitative findings are projected to highlight effective pedagogical strategies, such as project-based learning and digital portfolios, that maximize digital media’s potential in promoting creativity. The study's contribution to knowledge lies in its evidence-based elucidation of the specific ways digital media influences creative skills, offering theoretical validation for the application of the Creative Process Theory within technologically integrated art education settings. Additionally, it provides practical insights for educators and policymakers aiming to enhance art curricula through strategic incorporation of digital tools. The main conclusion underscores that digital media significantly enhances creative skills among art students, but its efficacy depends on pedagogical quality and contextual factors. Consequently, the study recommends professional development programs focused on digital pedagogies, the integration of digital portfolios into assessment, and further longitudinal research to evaluate long-term impacts. Overall, the findings affirm that digital media, when effectively integrated, can serve as a catalyst for transformative art education, fostering higher levels of creativity and technical competence in art students.

Thesis Overview

This research explores how the use of digital media tools and technologies influences the development of creative skills in art students. As digital tools such as tablets, graphic software, online resources, and multimedia applications become more prevalent in education, it is important to understand whether and how they impact students' ability to think creatively and produce original art. The study addresses a gap in current knowledge, as many art education programs either emphasize traditional skills or lack detailed insight into the specific effects of digital media on creativity. The research aims to examine the relationship between digital media integration and creative skills, identify the specific digital tools that facilitate or hinder creativity, and explore educators’ perceptions of their students’ creative development in digital-rich environments. The researcher will use a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys to measure students’ creative skills and qualitative interviews with art teachers for deeper insights. Data will be collected from a sample of approximately 150 art students and 20 art teachers from selected secondary schools. Students will complete standardized creative thinking assessments and questionnaires about their digital media usage, while teachers will participate in semi-structured interviews about their observations and teaching strategies. Quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical techniques such as regression analysis or ANOVA to identify significant relationships between digital media use and creativity levels. Qualitative data will be explored using thematic analysis to reveal common themes and perceptions among teachers. The expected contribution of this study is a clearer understanding of how digital media integration influences creative skill development, providing practical recommendations for educators on effective integration strategies. It will also enrich theoretical knowledge by connecting digital media use with creativity theories. The main outcome is to offer evidence-based guidance for enhancing art education programs in digitally integrated classrooms, ultimately aiming to improve student creativity and prepare learners better for a digital-oriented artistic landscape.
