Thesis Abstract
The integration of digital media into community art programs has emerged as a significant trend in enhancing participation, engagement, and creative expression within diverse communities, yet its adoption remains inconsistent and under-explored, particularly in institutional contexts like the City Arts Council. This study investigates the effectiveness, challenges, and opportunities of incorporating digital media into community art initiatives, aiming to provide empirical evidence and actionable insights that inform policy and practice. The specific objectives include examining the extent of digital media integration in current programs, identifying factors influencing successful adoption, assessing the impact on community engagement, and developing a conceptual framework to guide future integration strategies. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to garner comprehensive data. The population comprises 150 active participants, program coordinators, and digital media specialists associated with the City Arts Council's community projects. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 100 community participants, 15 program coordinators, and 10 digital media experts to ensure representativeness across demographic and professional categories. Data collection involved structured questionnaires measuring perceptions, engagement levels, and perceived barriers, alongside semi-structured interview guides exploring contextual and experiential factors influencing digital media use. The validity and reliability of instruments were established through pilot testing, Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.80, and expert validation. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis to identify predictors of successful digital media integration, and thematic analysis for qualitative interview data to identify emerging themes related to challenges and best practices. The study leverages theories such as the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework and the Diffusion of Innovations theory to interpret findings and develop a conceptual model illustrating pathways for effective digital media integration in community art settings. Expected findings suggest that digital media enhances community engagement by facilitating interactive participation, broadening outreach, and fostering innovative artistic expressions. However, barriers such as limited technical infrastructure, inadequate digital literacy, and resistance to change are anticipated to hinder full integration. The regression analysis is expected to identify digital literacy levels, perceived relevance, and institutional support as significant predictors. The thematic analysis is projected to reveal themes of capacity-building needs, resource constraints, and facilitators of innovation. This research contributes to the scholarly understanding by contextualizing digital media adoption within community arts, expanding the application of technology acceptance theories in arts education, and proposing a comprehensive framework for implementation. Practically, it equips policymakers, arts administrators, and practitioners with evidence-based guidelines to foster effective digital media integration, emphasizing capacity development, infrastructural investments, and participatory design. The study concludes that strategic, contextualized integration of digital media can significantly enhance community arts programming but requires concerted efforts in digital literacy training, infrastructural development, and change management. Recommendations include the development of targeted capacity-building initiatives, sustainable funding models, and ongoing evaluation mechanisms. Future research directions propose longitudinal studies to assess long-term impacts and comparative analyses across different community contexts, thereby extending the understanding of digital media's transformative potential in community art programs.
Thesis Overview
This research focuses on the way digital media can be used to enhance community art programs through a detailed case study of the City Arts Council. It seeks to understand how digital tools such as social media, online interactive platforms, digital art-making tools, and virtual exhibition spaces are integrated into community art activities, and what impact they have on community engagement, participation, and the quality of the art produced. This study matters because digital media has become a powerful means of communication and creative expression, yet many community art organizations still struggle with effectively incorporating these technologies. Understanding best practices and potential challenges can help organizations improve their program outcomes and reach larger audiences.
The research aims to fill a gap in existing knowledge by providing an in-depth look at the practical application of digital media in a real-world community art setting and identifying factors that influence successful integration. The study will follow a step-by-step approach beginning with a review of relevant literature on digital media in community art, followed by collecting data from various sources such as interviews with staff, surveys of community participants, and observations of events and workshops. The sample will include 15 staff members, 100 community members, and 10 digital media projects.
Data analysis will involve qualitative methods such as thematic analysis to understand perceptions and experiences, along with quantitative techniques such as descriptive statistics and correlation analysis to measure engagement levels. The researcher will also examine whether digital media use correlates with increased participation or improved art outcomes. The expected contribution is a clearer understanding of how digital media influences community art efforts and guidelines for effective integration.
The main outcome of this research will be evidence-based recommendations for community arts organizations seeking to adopt digital media. Overall, the study aims to demonstrate how digital media can be leveraged to improve community engagement and artistic expression, providing practical insights for similar organizations looking to innovate in their programming.
