This study investigates how studio-based learning (SBL) influences engagement and achievement in secondary school art education, addressing a persistent gap between policy endorsement of inquiry-driven pedagogy and its measurable impact on student outcomes. The problem centers on whether SBL environments, characterized by iterative, hands-on projects, peer critique, and teacher-facilitated studio culture, can produce sustained engagement and higher achievement in mainstream art curricula across diverse urban and rural contexts. The aim is to determine the extent to which SBL enhances cognitive, affective, and behavioural dimensions of student engagement and to quantify its effect on academic achievement in art by triangulating qualitative and quantitative data. Specific objectives include (1) assessing changes in behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement over a 16-week term using a validated engagement instrument; (2) evaluating differences in art achievement outcomes between SBL and traditional instructional approaches through standardized rubric scores; (3) examining the relationship between studio practices (workspace organization, critique frequency, and material autonomy) and engagement and achievement; (4) exploring teachers’ perceptions of feasibility, challenges, and instructional changes associated with SBL; and (5) testing a mediation model in which student engagement mediates the effect of SBL on achievement. The study employs a mixed-methods, quasi-experimental design within two matched secondary schools, selecting a total of 420 students in grades 9–10 and 12 arts courses across urban and rural districts. In the quantitative strand, 210 students participate in an SBL?based curriculum implemented over one crop of the school year, while 210 serve as controls in traditional classrooms. The study contributes to knowledge by providing robust empirical evidence on the efficacy of SBL in secondary art education, clarifying which components of studio practice most strongly drive engagement and achievement, and offering a tested implementation model for scaling SBL within diverse school settings. The main conclusion is that well-implemented SBL can yield meaningful gains in student engagement and art achievement, contingent on structured critique cycles, material autonomy, and supportive teacher facilitation. Recommendations include targeted professional development for teachers in designing studio sequences, investment in flexible studio spaces and resource provision, explicit alignment of assessment with studio practices, and policy guidance to embed SBL as a core instructional option within secondary art curricula.
