Thesis Abstract
The integration of digital art tools and technologies into art education curricula has become increasingly vital in preparing students for contemporary creative industries, yet the comprehensive design and systematic evaluation of such integration remain underexplored. This study seeks to develop a pedagogical framework for effectively embedding digital art in existing art education curricula and evaluate its impact on students' creative skills, technological proficiency, and conceptual understanding. The primary aim is to produce evidence-based strategies that enhance digital literacy and artistic innovation among secondary school art students. Specific objectives include examining current curricular practices, designing a digital art integration model grounded in constructivist and technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) theories, implementing the model in selected schools, and evaluating its outcomes through empirical analysis. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies within a pragmatic paradigm. The population comprises art teachers and students from 15 secondary schools in a metropolitan region, with a purposive sample of 150 students and 15 teachers. Sample selection employs stratified random sampling for students based on grade levels and purposive sampling for teachers with at least three years of digital art teaching experience. Data collection instruments include semi-structured interview guides for teachers, student reflective journals, classroom observation checklists, and standardized assessment tools measuring digital literacy and artistic skills. Validity and reliability are ensured through pilot testing, expert reviews, and calculating Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.80 for quantitative instruments. Data analysis involves multiple techniques thematic analysis for qualitative data to identify key themes related to pedagogical practices and perceptions; descriptive statistics to summarize demographic and baseline data; paired t-tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to compare pre- and post-intervention scores on digital literacy and artistic competence; and regression analysis to determine predictors of successful digital art integration. The conceptual framework guiding the evaluation integrates models of technological pedagogical content knowledge, Schon's reflective practice, and the TPACK model, facilitating a multifaceted understanding of pedagogical efficacy. Expected findings include statistically significant improvements in students’ digital literacy, creative problem-solving abilities, and conceptual understanding of art concepts following the integration of digital tools. Teachers are anticipated to report increased confidence and pedagogical repertoire in digital art instruction, with the model demonstrating adaptability across diverse educational contexts. The study is expected to reveal that structured digital integration aligned with theoretical pedagogical frameworks positively influences learning outcomes, promotes student engagement, and fosters innovative artistic practices.
