Thesis Abstract

As digital technology continues to transform audience engagement with cultural heritage, this study investigates the potential of immersive digital experiences to enhance public participation and appreciation of cultural sites and artifacts. Despite the increasing adoption of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and 3D reconstruction tools in cultural institutions, empirical evidence on their effectiveness in fostering meaningful engagement remains limited. The primary aim of this research is to evaluate how immersive digital experiences can increase user engagement, cultural understanding, and educational outcomes. To achieve this, the study sets out three specific objectives (1) to assess user perception and satisfaction with digital immersive exhibits, (2) to identify the key design elements that influence engagement, and (3) to develop a conceptual framework linking immersion features with visitor engagement metrics. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach comprising a quantitative experimental design and qualitative thematic analysis. The population consists of 300 visitors at three major cultural heritage sites equipped with immersive digital installations, with a stratified random sampling technique used to select participants. Quantitative data are collected through structured questionnaires measuring variables such as engagement, satisfaction, perceived authenticity, and learning outcomes, with validity established via expert panel review and reliability confirmed through Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.8. Qualitative data are gathered through semi-structured interviews with 30 randomly selected participants to explore underlying perceptions and contextual factors affecting engagement. Data analysis employs multiple regression analysis to examine relationships between immersive features and engagement levels, along with thematic analysis using NVivo software to interpret interview transcripts. Structural equation modeling (SEM) is applied to test the proposed conceptual framework for mediating effects of aesthetic quality, interactivity, and narrative coherence on engagement. Anticipated findings suggest that immersive digital experiences significantly increase visitor engagement, embedded through interactive content, realistic visualization, and contextual storytelling. Furthermore, the study expects to identify specific design elements—such as multisensory stimulation and user agency—that predict higher satisfaction and learning benefits. The results will contribute to the theoretical understanding of the role of immersion in cultural engagement, extending the current literature by integrating technology acceptance models and experiential learning theories, notably the Flow Theory and the Dual-Coding Theory for multimedia learning. The study’s contributions include providing a validated model that educational and cultural institutions can adopt to optimize digital immersive exhibits for enhanced visitor interaction. It also highlights practical design principles for immersive technology application in heritage settings, emphasizing accessibility and inclusivity. The key limitations pertain to the sample’s regional concentration and technological variability across sites, which suggest avenues for future longitudinal and cross-cultural studies. Ultimately, the research concludes that well-designed digital immersive experiences serve as a powerful tool to augment traditional interpretive methods, thereby fostering deeper cultural appreciation and learning. Based on the findings, recommendations include strategic investment in multisensory interaction technologies, user-centered design approaches, and ongoing evaluation mechanisms to refine immersive exhibits continually. This study advances the field of art, heritage, and educational technology by bridging gaps between technological innovation and effective engagement strategies, fostering sustainable visitor participation in cultural heritage preservation efforts.

Then, a sample of 200 museum visitors will be selected randomly to participate in different digital experiences created for the study. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics and inferential tests such as regression analysis will be used to explore the relationship between the digital experiences and visitor outcomes. The expected contribution of this study is a clearer understanding of how immersive digital methods can be effectively applied to cultural heritage sites, providing guidelines for designers and curators. It will also add to academic knowledge about the role of technology in heritage interpretation. The main expected outcome is that well-designed immersive experiences will significantly enhance visitor engagement and educational outcomes, leading to more innovative and inclusive approaches in cultural heritage management.
