Thesis Abstract

The persistent challenge of fostering active community participation and cultural expression within urban environments has prompted the exploration of innovative public art interventions, with interactive murals emerging as a promising strategy to enhance community engagement. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate an interactive mural initiative to determine its effectiveness in increasing community involvement, social cohesion, and cultural awareness. Specific objectives include examining community perceptions of interactive murals, assessing behavioral changes resulting from engagement, and identifying the key design elements that maximize participatory impact. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative surveys and qualitative focus group discussions to provide a comprehensive analysis of community responses. The target population comprises residents of a mid-sized metropolitan neighborhood with an estimated population of 15,000 individuals. A stratified random sampling technique was employed to select 300 residents for the quantitative survey, ensuring representation across age, gender, socioeconomic status, and length of residence. Additionally, 30 participants were purposively sampled for focus group discussions to explore in-depth perceptions and experiences related to the mural project. Data collection instruments included a structured questionnaire measuring community engagement levels, social cohesion, and cultural awareness, and semi-structured interview guides for the focus groups. The study advances existing frameworks by integrating technological, social, and cultural dimensions into the conceptualization of effective community murals. Practically, the findings inform policymakers, urban planners, and artists seeking sustainable strategies to foster communal bonds through participatory public art. Concluding, the study affirms that well-designed interactive murals are potent catalysts for community engagement, promoting social cohesion and cultural dialogue. Recommendations include adopting participatory design processes involving community stakeholders, integrating culturally relevant themes, and utilizing accessible interactive technologies. Future research should explore longitudinal impacts of such interventions and extend investigations across diverse urban settings to validate and generalize the findings. The study thus underscores the transformative potential of interactive murals in cultivating vibrant, inclusive, and connected urban communities.
