Thesis Abstract

Urban public art systems increasingly confront environmental, social, and economic stresses that threaten their durability, accessibility, and cultural relevance. This study addresses the problem of sustaining aesthetic value and community relevance of public art in rapidly changing urban contexts, where interventions often fail to adapt to evolving urban dynamics, local identities, and maintenance constraints. The aim is to develop an Aesthetic Resilience Framework (ARF) that integrates design aesthetics, community co-creation, and adaptive governance to enhance the longevity, inclusivity, and sustainability of urban public artworks. Specific objectives are (1) to identify aesthetic attributes that predict long-term public engagement and maintenance outcomes; (2) to examine how participatory design processes influence resilience indicators such as material robustness, vandalism rates, and social cohesion; (3) to formulate a theoretical model linking aesthetic quality, community ownership, and governance arrangements; (4) to test the framework across diverse urban precincts to derive transferable principles for policy and practice. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach guided by the interpretive-constructivist paradigm and anchored in resilience theory and aesthetic experience theory. A comparative case study design is employed across three mid-sized cities with distinct socio-economic profiles, selected to represent varied climate risks, maintenance regimes, and cultural contexts. The population includes public art projects completed within the last five years and stakeholders comprising artists, municipal curators, community representatives, and maintenance staff. A purposive sample of 12 projects (4 per city) is analyzed, with 180 survey respondents and 36 in-depth interviews conducted to capture perceptual and experiential dimensions of resilience. Data collection instruments comprise standardized questionnaires measuring perceived aesthetic quality, perceived legitimacy, and maintenance efficacy; semi-structured interview protocols exploring design processes, community engagement, and governance mechanisms; and project archival data including maintenance logs, budgets, and usage metrics. Validity and reliability are addressed through triangulation, pilot testing of instruments (n=30), and inter-rater reliability checks for qualitative coding (Cohen’s kappa ? 0.70). Quantitative data are analyzed using multiple regression to identify predictors of maintenance outcomes and community engagement, structural equation modeling to test the proposed ARF linkages, and ANOVA to compare resilience indicators across city contexts. Qualitative data are subjected to thematic analysis to extract recurrent motifs on aesthetics, participant meaning-making, and governance experiences, supplemented by cross-case synthesis to identify contextual moderators. The study advances a conceptual model that situates aesthetic resilience at the nexus of (a) material and perceptual durability, (b) participatory design and sense of ownership, and (c) adaptive governance including funding flexibility, maintenance planning, and policy alignment. Expected findings include that high perceived aesthetic quality coupled with authentic community involvement significantly reduces vandalism risk, improves maintenance responsiveness, and strengthens social cohesion, while adaptive governance moderates these relationships under climate- and scenario-driven stressors. The anticipated contribution to knowledge comprises (1) a robust, transferable ARF comprising measurable resilience indicators and design-practice guidelines; (2) empirical evidence linking aesthetic dimensions to tangible sustainability outcomes in urban public art; and (3) a policy-oriented framework detailing governance configurations that support ongoing maintenance and community stewardship. The study is expected to inform urban design practice, cultural policy, and heritage management by providing concrete recommendations for selecting materials, enabling participatory processes, and structuring funding and maintenance regimes to promote enduring aesthetic value. The main conclusion posits that integrating aesthetic quality with inclusive, adaptive governance yields resilient public art that remains functionally robust and culturally meaningful amidst urban change. Recommendations include adopting standardized post-implementation evaluation protocols, establishing community liaison nodes within municipal bodies, and embedding resilience-oriented metrics into commissioning briefs to ensure sustainability of aesthetic interventions across diverse urban landscapes.
