Abstract
This thesis investigates the integration of sustainable design practices in urban affordable housing projects. The global housing crisis has posed significant challenges for urban areas, with a growing demand for affordable housing solutions that are both socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable. Through a comprehensive literature review, this study explores various sustainable design strategies and their applications in urban affordable housing projects. The research methodology involves a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches to gather data and analyze the impact of sustainable design on the affordability, livability, and environmental performance of housing projects. Chapter One provides an introduction to the research topic, outlining the background, problem statement, objectives, limitations, scope, significance, structure of the thesis, and definitions of key terms. Chapter Two presents a detailed literature review, covering ten key areas related to sustainable design practices in urban affordable housing projects. These areas include energy efficiency, passive design strategies, green building materials, water conservation, waste management, social sustainability, community engagement, affordability challenges, policy frameworks, and case studies of successful projects. Chapter Three focuses on the research methodology, detailing the research design, data collection methods, sampling techniques, data analysis procedures, and ethical considerations. The chapter also discusses the limitations of the study and the steps taken to ensure the reliability and validity of the research findings. Chapter Four presents the discussion of findings, analyzing the data collected from case studies and empirical research to evaluate the effectiveness of sustainable design practices in improving the affordability, livability, and environmental performance of urban affordable housing projects. The chapter explores the challenges and opportunities in implementing sustainable design strategies and highlights best practices for achieving sustainable urban housing solutions. Chapter Five concludes the thesis by summarizing the key findings, discussing the implications for practice and policy, and offering recommendations for future research in the field of sustainable design in urban affordable housing projects.
