This study investigates how to sustain archaeological tourism through a community-led visitor experience that balances heritage conservation, local empowerment, and visitor satisfaction in coastal Anatolia’s multi-site landscape. The problem addressed is the tension between heritage preservation imperatives and rising tourist demand, which often marginalizes community voices and dilutes site integrity. The aim is to design, implement, and evaluate a replicable community-driven visitor experience that enhances interpretive quality, distributes economic benefits equitably, and strengthens conservation outcomes. Specific objectives include (1) identifying community priorities and acceptable management practices, (2) co-developing an interpretive framework and route that integrates archaeological evidence with living traditions, (3) piloting a visitor experience with clear governance and benefit-sharing mechanisms, (4) assessing impacts on visitor satisfaction, site stewardship, and local livelihoods, and (5) evaluating scalability and transferability to similar archaeological landscapes. The methodology adopts a mixed-methods design anchored in participatory action research. The population comprises three stakeholder groups local community associations (n=24 active members per site), site managers and archaeologists (n=12), and visitors (target N=600 across the pilot phase). A sequential explanatory design guides data collection quantitative surveys (n=600 visitor exit surveys and n=72 systematic stakeholder surveys) to measure satisfaction, perceived value, and economic impact, followed by qualitative methods for depth. The research contributes to knowledge by operationalizing a scalable, inclusive framework for sustainable archaeological tourism that explicitly integrates community governance with rigorous evaluation of conservation and economic outcomes. It advances methodological rigor by combining participatory design with robust mixed-methods analysis and demonstrates how Institutional Theory and Self-Determination Theory can illuminate chain-of-command effects, motivation, and commitment in community-led tourism initiatives. The study concludes with a set of actionable recommendations (1) institutionalize co-management protocols, (2) codify interpretive guidelines and training programs for guides, (3) establish a transparent revenue-sharing mechanism with audit trails, (4) implement continuous monitoring of conservation indicators and visitor impact, and (5) develop a scalable toolkit for replication in other archaeological landscapes. Limitations include potential biases from self-reported data and site-specific cultural dynamics that may affect transferability. Overall, the research provides a robust, evidence-based blueprint for sustaining archaeological tourism through empowered communities, enhancing both heritage protection and local livelihoods, with implications for policy, museum practice, and destination management.
