This study addresses the challenge of developing effective tour route designs that promote sustainable tourism by enhancing visitor experience while minimizing environmental and cultural impacts. The primary aim is to formulate a comprehensive framework for designing archaeological tour routes that are both engaging and environmentally sustainable. The specific objectives include identifying key factors influencing visitor engagement, assessing current tour route practices, evaluating perceived conservation impacts among stakeholders, and proposing a sustainable routing model grounded in empirical findings. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates qualitative approaches—using thematic analysis of interviews with site managers, tour guides, and visitors (n=40)—with quantitative methods such as a survey administered to 300 visitors to measure their engagement levels and perceptions of conservation. The population comprises visitors and site management personnel at five nationally significant archaeological sites located within a European context. Data collection instruments include semi-structured interview guides, structured questionnaires, and site observation checklists. The thematic analysis is projected to uncover critical themes including visitor motivation, perceived control over tour experience, and environmental awareness, which influence sustainable behavior. This research contributes novel insights into the integral role of route design in fostering sustainable archaeological tourism, filling a notable gap in empirical verification of practical design principles linked to conservation outcomes. The study proposes a model for sustainable tour route planning that synthesizes behavioral theories with conservation principles, offering a validated framework adaptable across diverse archaeological contexts. Consequently, the findings serve to advance scholarly understanding of sustainable tourism practices in archaeology and offer practical guidelines for site managers, policymakers, and tour operators. The main conclusion emphasizes that strategic tour route design—anchored in behavioral insights and conservation imperatives—is essential for achieving sustainable archaeological tourism. It recommends adopting participatory planning approaches involving local communities and stakeholders, integrating interpretive technologies, and emphasizing environmentally sensitive infrastructure. Further research suggested includes longitudinal studies to evaluate the long-term impacts of designed routes on site conservation and visitor behavior, as well as comparative analyses across different geographic regions to generalize the framework's applicability. This study aims to inform evidence-based policies that ensure the preservation of archaeological heritage while maximizing visitor educational and recreational benefits in a sustainable manner.
