Assessing the Impact of Heritage Tourism on Archaeological Site Preservation

Thesis Abstract

The rapid growth of heritage tourism has significantly increased visitation to archaeological sites, raising concerns about the sustainability of preservation efforts amidst infrastructural development, tourist-related degradation, and resource limitations. This study investigates the multifaceted impact of heritage tourism on archaeological site preservation, with the objective of providing empirical evidence to inform sustainable management practices. The research aims to assess the extent of physical deterioration, environmental degradation, and cultural disturbance attributable to tourism activities, while also identifying the socio-economic benefits and challenges faced by local communities involved in heritage tourism. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates quantitative and qualitative approaches to capture a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The population comprises site managers, local residents, and tourists visiting three selected archaeological sites—namely, the Ancient Ruins of Midvale, the Old City of Silverbrook, and the Heritage Valley Site—totaling an estimated 150 individuals. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 100 respondents for questionnaires and 30 for in-depth interviews, ensuring representation across stakeholder groups. Quantitative data were gathered through structured questionnaires measuring perceptions of site degradation, level of visitor numbers, and socio-economic benefits, while qualitative data were collected via semi-structured interviews focusing on stakeholder insights into site management, tourism practices, and preservation challenges. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to examine relationships between tourist activity levels and physical site deterioration. Thematic content analysis was applied to qualitative interview transcripts to elucidate stakeholder perspectives, while the theoretical framework was anchored on Doxey’s Irritation Index and the Sustainable Tourism Development Model, which facilitated understanding of stakeholder attitudes and sustainability considerations. The validity and reliability of instruments were established through pilot testing and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.75. Preliminary findings are expected to reveal a statistically significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between increased tourist visitation and physical deterioration at the sites, particularly in areas with minimal visitor management strategies. The analysis anticipates identifying specific damaging activities such as vandalism, soil erosion, and pollution, alongside socio-economic gains including employment opportunities and local enterprise development. The stakeholder interviews are predicted to highlight gaps in current management frameworks and a pressing need for integrated conservation strategies that balance tourism benefits with preservation imperatives. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by providing context-specific empirical evidence on how heritage tourism influences archaeological site integrity. It advances theoretical understanding by testing the applicability of the Doxey’s Irritation Index in a heritage preservation context and expands the discourse on sustainable tourism by integrating community perceptions and site management dynamics. Conclusively, the study underscores that unregulated tourism exacerbates site degradation, urging the adoption of comprehensive visitor management plans, sustainable tourism policies, and community involvement initiatives. Recommendations derived from the findings include the implementation of stricter visitation protocols, increased investment in site conservation infrastructure, and community-inclusive planning processes. Further research should explore longitudinal impacts of tourism interventions and the development of innovative preservation technologies. This study aims to serve as a blueprint for heritage managers, policymakers, and local stakeholders committed to safeguarding archaeological sites against the adverse effects of tourism while maximizing socio-economic benefits.
