This study investigates how sustainable tourism practices affect the preservation of archaeological sites within coastal and inland heritage corridors, addressing the persistent tension between visitor access, site integrity, and community livelihoods. The problem centers on inconsistent preservation outcomes where rising visitation and insufficient management frameworks threaten material integrity, while overly restrictive measures risk cultural and economic viability. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of sustainability-driven interventions on preservation outcomes and to develop a framework for integrating conservation priorities with tourism development. Specific objectives are to (1) quantify the relationship between visitor pressure indicators and site degradation metrics; (2) assess the effectiveness of sustainability interventions—carrying capacity planning, visitor education, protective infrastructure, and revenue recycling—in reducing deterioration rates; (3) explore stakeholders’ perceptions of preservation practices and compliance with management regulations; (4) identify contextual factors that mediate the adoption of sustainable tourism strategies; and (5) propose a context-sensitive protocol for enhancing preservation while supporting local economies. The study adopts a mixed-methods design combining quantitative and qualitative strands to triangulate evidence. The population comprises archaeological sites within three regional heritage belts with varying visitation intensities and management regimes. A stratified random sample of 36 sites is drawn, with 12 high-traffic, 12 moderate-traffic, and 12 low-traffic sites. Data collection employs (i) structured visitor surveys (n=600 across sites) to capture exposure, attitudes toward preservation measures, and willingness to participate in conservation programs; (ii) archival site records and conservation reports (covering a 10-year window) to derive degradation indicators such as surface wear indices, foundation settlement rates, and artifact loss reports; (iii) on-site assessments using a standardized preservation condition rubric; and (iv) semi-structured interviews with 24 stakeholders, including site managers, local business operators, community representatives, and national heritage officials. The instruments are validated through pilot testing, expert review, and inter-rater reliability checks (Cohen’s kappa ? 0.75) for the condition rubric and interview protocols. Data analysis integrates regression modeling to test relationships between visitor pressure variables (annual visit numbers, crowding scores) and preservation outcomes, controlling for site age, material composition, and climate exposure; multilevel modeling to account for nested site-level and region-level effects; and structural equation modeling to examine mediating roles of management practices, education programs, and infrastructure quality. The theoretical lens combines the Sustainable Tourism Theory and the Preservation Ethics framework, with explicit reference to the Governance of Conservation model to interpret policy-implementation gaps. A conceptual model illustrating the interconnections among visitor pressure, management interventions, ecological and cultural preservation outcomes, and socio-economic factors will be developed and tested. Expected findings indicate that well-implemented sustainability interventions correlate with slower deterioration rates, higher visitor satisfaction with interpretive programming, and increased local revenue reinvestment in conservation. Education-led behavior change and protected infrastructure are anticipated to mediate and strengthen preservation outcomes, while lapses in enforcement and insufficient stakeholder engagement are predicted to undermine conservation gains. The study contributes to knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of integrated sustainability strategies in archaeological preservation, offering a robust, context-sensitive framework for policy-makers and site managers that links monitoring, governance, and community empowerment. Methodologically, it advances mixed-methods approaches in heritage tourism research, demonstrating how quantitative site indicators and qualitative stakeholder insights can be combined to evaluate conservation interventions. The main conclusion anticipates that sustainable tourism, when embedded within legally backed governance, transparent revenue recycling, and continuous education, fosters improved preservation trajectories without compromising community livelihoods. Recommendations include (1) institutionalizing adaptive carrying capacity frameworks with regular monitoring; (2) scaling up education and interpretation programs to cultivate visitor compliance; (3) embedding revenue recycling mechanisms into conservation budgets with independent auditing; and (4) establishing participatory governance structures that involve local communities, site managers, and researchers in ongoing preservation planning. Suggestions for further research include longitudinal studies to track long-term preservation outcomes and comparative studies across different climatic and cultural settings.
