Thesis Abstract
This study addresses the growing tension between heritage conservation, local livelihoods, and visitor demand within Archaeotourism, focusing on how tourist activity and heritage site management affect community well-being and site sustainability. The problem stems from fragmented assessment practices that overlook resident perceptions, equity of benefit distribution, and spatially explicit mapping of tourism pressures on archaeological resources. The aim is to develop a robust framework for assessing Archaeotourism impacts and to produce a community-based mapping tool that integrates social, economic, and environmental dimensions. A stratified random sample of 300 residents and 40 site managers, 25 tour operators, and 400 standard visitor surveys will be surveyed. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires for households, semi-structured interviews with community leaders and managers, focus group discussions with residents, participant observation at sites, and GIS spatial layers built from high-resolution satellite imagery and community-drawn participatory maps. Instrument validity will be ensured through expert review and pilot testing (n=40 for questionnaires). Reliability will be assessed using Cronbach’s alpha for multi-item scales, targeting at least 0.7.
