Thesis Abstract
Smallholder coffee farming systems face increasing pressure from climate variability and soil degradation, necessitating sustainable land-use practices; agroforestry adoption has the potential to enhance biodiversity, improve soil fertility, diversify income, and increase resilience, yet uptake among coffee cooperatives remains uneven due to economic, social, and knowledge barriers. This study aims to assess the drivers, extent, and impacts of agroforestry adoption within smallholder coffee cooperatives in a multiregional setting, with a view to informing policy and practice on sustainable intensification. The objectives are (1) to quantify the prevalence of agroforestry adoption and classify agroforestry configurations across representative smallholder plots; (2) to identify socio-economic, institutional, and knowledge-related determinants of adoption using a purposive multi-stage sampling framework; (3) to evaluate the agroecological and economic outcomes of adoption, including yield, quality metrics, shade-tree biodiversity, and climate resilience indicators; (4) to examine cooperative governance, service delivery mechanisms, and credit access that influence adoption decisions; and (5) to develop a context-specific conceptual model linking determinants to outcomes that can guide scalable interventions. A mixed-methods approach is employed. The study design combines a cross-sectional survey of 420 smallholder household heads affiliated with three coffee cooperatives, complemented by 60 in-depth interviews with cooperative managers, extension agents, and agroforestry practitioners, and 20 focus group discussions with member farmers.
