Thesis Abstract

In the context of rural Brazil, where agricultural productivity is vital to national food security and economic stability, the proliferation of digital technologies presents both opportunities and challenges for farmer training programs. Traditional pedagogical approaches often fall short in effectively reaching and engaging smallholder farmers, particularly in remote areas with limited infrastructure. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of digital pedagogy within farmer training initiatives and identify factors influencing learning outcomes. The specific objectives include assessing farmers’ perceptions of digital learning tools, measuring improvements in agricultural knowledge and practices post-training, and identifying barriers to and facilitators of digital pedagogy adoption. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study combines quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of digital pedagogy effectiveness. The quantitative component involves administering structured questionnaires to a representative sample of 300 smallholder farmers across three rural municipalities in the state of Minas Gerais, selected through stratified random sampling to ensure demographic and geographical diversity. The qualitative component includes semi-structured interviews with 15 trainers and program coordinators involved in the digital farmer education initiatives. Data collection instruments comprise validated survey scales for digital literacy, perceived usability, and learning satisfaction, alongside interview guides exploring contextual factors affecting pedagogy efficacy. Data analysis will utilize multiple statistical techniques. Descriptive statistics will summarize demographic characteristics and key variables. Inferential analysis, including multiple regression analysis, will determine the relationship between digital literacy levels and learning outcomes. ANOVA tests will compare differences in knowledge gains across demographic groups. Thematic analysis will be applied to qualitative interview transcripts to identify recurring themes related to barriers, facilitators, and contextual influences on digital pedagogy effectiveness. Expected findings of the study suggest that digital pedagogy has a positive impact on farmers’ agricultural knowledge and practices, particularly when tailored to local contexts and combined with technical support. The study anticipates identifying significant correlations between digital literacy and learning outcomes, with higher literacy levels predicting greater benefits from digital training modules. Furthermore, qualitative insights are expected to reveal critical factors such as infrastructural limitations, language barriers, and farmers’ prior exposure to digital devices that influence program success. The findings will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on instructional innovation in agricultural extension, particularly in low-resource settings. This research advances understanding of how digital pedagogical strategies can be optimally designed and implemented to enhance agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers. It draws upon and integrates theoretical frameworks like Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Diffusion of Innovations Theory to interpret findings related to technology adoption and behavioral change. The study’s contribution includes practical recommendations for policymakers, development agencies, and educators to refine digital training approaches, improve infrastructure, and foster farmer empowerment through digital inclusion. The study concludes that leveraging interactive and contextualized digital pedagogies can significantly enhance learning outcomes if accompanied by targeted infrastructural improvements and capacity-building initiatives. Recommendations emphasize investing in rural digital infrastructure, customizing content to local dialects and farming practices, and incorporating farmers' feedback into program design. Future research avenues include longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impacts of digital pedagogy on agricultural productivity and sustainability in diverse rural contexts. Overall, this study provides an evidence-based foundation for scaling effective digital farmer education strategies tailored to the socioeconomic realities of rural Brazil.
