Thesis Abstract

The effectiveness of practical skills acquisition in agricultural science education remains a critical determinant of graduates’ competence and readiness for the agricultural sector, yet discrepancies persist between different educational programs in varying institutional contexts. This study addresses the urgent need to compare practical competency development among agricultural science programs across public and private institutions, aiming to identify factors influencing skills acquisition and to inform curriculum enhancement strategies. The specific objectives are to (1) evaluate the levels of practical skills among students in selected public and private agricultural institutions, (2) examine the influence of instructional methods, laboratory facilities, and teaching methodologies on students’ practical competencies, and (3) determine the relationship between students’ academic backgrounds and their skills acquisition outcomes. Employing a comparative cross-sectional research design, the study targeted a population of 750 senior undergraduate students enrolled in agricultural science programs across five public and five private universities in the country. A stratified random sampling technique was employed to select a representative sample of 300 students, with proportional allocation based on institution type, ensuring diversity in perspectives and experiences. Data collection was undertaken through a structured questionnaire comprising Likert-scale items and practical assessment scores, complemented by observational checklists and interviews with instructors and laboratory technicians to gather qualitative insights. The validity of research instruments was established through expert reviews, and reliability was confirmed via Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.78. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations) to profile students’ skills levels, followed by inferential analyses including Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to assess differences in practical skills across institution types. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the extent to which instructional factors predict practical competencies, grounded within the theoretical framework of Experiential Learning Theory (Kolb) which emphasizes active, hands-on engagement in skill development, and Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura), highlighting the role of environmental and observational influences. Thematic analysis was applied to qualitative data for triangulation purposes. The anticipated findings suggest that students in private institutions demonstrate higher practical skills scores, attributable to more advanced laboratory facilities and interactive teaching strategies, whereas public institutions may lag due to resource constraints. Furthermore, instructional methods emphasizing participatory and problem-based learning are expected to correlate positively with competency levels. The study is expected to reveal significant relationships between students’ prior coursework and their practical skills, suggesting the importance of foundational knowledge in skill development. This research significantly contributes to the body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the comparative effectiveness of different agricultural science education modalities, guiding policy makers and curriculum developers towards targeted investments in instructional infrastructure and pedagogical approaches. It offers a validated model illustrating the key predictors of practical skills acquisition, which can be adapted to other educational contexts. The study concludes that enhancing hands-on learning opportunities, upgrading laboratory facilities, and adopting student-centered instructional strategies are crucial for improving practical competency levels. Recommendations include increased funding for laboratory infrastructure, integration of modern technological tools such as virtual laboratories, and faculty professional development programs focused on active learning techniques. Lastly, further research is suggested to explore longitudinal impacts on graduates’ employability and entrepreneurial success stemming from improved practical skills education.
