Thesis Abstract

This study investigates how knowledge is transferred from agricultural education outreach programs to farm households, addressing the persistent gap between educational interventions and on-farm practice adoption in smallholder farming communities. Despite extensive outreach efforts by extension services and agribusiness NGOs, observable changes in farmers’ practices remain inconsistent, undermining gains in productivity, resource efficiency, and risk management. The aim is to assess the effectiveness of knowledge transfer processes within outreach activities and identify factors that facilitate or hinder uptake of recommended practices. Specific objectives are (1) to evaluate the reach and relevance of outreach content for participating farmers; (2) to examine cognitive, behavioral, and contextual determinants of knowledge utilization on farm; (3) to measure changes in knowledge, attitudes, and intended or actual practices post-intervention; (4) to test the applicability of established knowledge transfer theories in the agricultural extension context; and (5) to provide targeted recommendations to enhance knowledge transfer outcomes. The study adopts a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design anchored in the Knowledge Transfer Theory and the Diffusion of Innovations framework to capture both the breadth and depth of knowledge transfer processes. The population comprises smallholder farmers engaged in ten district extension programs conducted by a national agricultural extension service over two consecutive cropping seasons. A stratified random sample of 360 farmers will be selected, supplemented by purposive sampling of 20 extension agents and 10 program coordinators for qualitative insights. Data collection instruments include a structured farmer survey measuring exposure to outreach activities, perceived usefulness, learning transfer, and self-reported practice changes, alongside standardized knowledge assessments administered pre- and post-intervention. In-depth semi-structured interviews will be conducted with extension staff and farmer focus groups to explore contextual factors and perceived barriers. Validity will be enhanced through content validation of survey instruments, pilot testing with 30 respondents, triangulation of quantitative and qualitative data, and member checking for interview transcripts. Reliability will be examined via Cronbach’s alpha for scales (target ? ? 0.70). Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests and repeated-measures ANOVA to assess knowledge and practice changes over time, and hierarchical multiple regression to identify predictors of transfer success. Structural equation modeling (SEM) will test a measurement model and the structural pathways linking outreach exposure, learning, attitudes, social influence, and practice adoption. Qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis using an iterative coding framework to identify recurring patterns, with triangulation against quantitative findings. The study will also apply a conceptual transfer model to map the stages of knowledge dissemination, comprehension, decision-making, implementation, and maintenance. Expected findings include measurable improvements in knowledge scores and reported adoption of certified practices, with the magnitude of change moderated by factors such as prior experience, access to inputs, gender and household decision-making dynamics, farm size, and proximity to extension services. It is anticipated that outreach content that aligns with farmers’ daily constraints and provides on-farm demonstrations will yield higher transfer efficacy. The study will contribute to knowledge by empirically validating or refining the application of Knowledge Transfer Theory and Diffusion of Innovations within agricultural education outreach, offering a context-specific transfer model for smallholder systems. Practical contributions include actionable recommendations for program design co-creation of content with farmer groups, emphasis on hands-on demonstrations and farmer-led learning, improved follow-up and peer-learning structures, and integrated support for access to inputs and credit. The conclusion will underscore the importance of aligning outreach strategically with local conditions, and the recommendations will inform policy and practice to enhance the scalability and sustainability of knowledge transfer in agricultural extension.
