Thesis Abstract

The effectiveness of agricultural education pedagogy critically influences the development of a competent and adaptable agricultural workforce capable of addressing contemporary sustainability challenges. Despite the increasing emphasis on integrating sustainability principles into agricultural education, there remains a significant gap in the systematic development of a comprehensive competency framework that aligns pedagogical practices with sustainable agricultural objectives. This study aims to develop a robust, evidence-based, and contextually relevant competency framework that guides the formulation and implementation of sustainable pedagogies in agricultural education. Specifically, the study seeks to identify core competencies required for sustainable agricultural practices, evaluate current pedagogical approaches, and construct a model that integrates these elements to enhance educational outcomes. The research adopts a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design, beginning with qualitative inquiry to explore stakeholders’ perceptions and experiences, followed by quantitative validation of the emergent framework. The qualitative phase involves semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 30 key informants, including agricultural educators, curriculum developers, industry experts, and students, conducted within a purposively sampled population across three leading agricultural colleges. Data collected are subjected to thematic analysis using NVivo software, guided by Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory and Bloom’s Taxonomy to capture competencies at both cognitive and behavioral levels. The quantitative phase involves designing a structured survey instrument based on qualitative findings, distributed to 200 agricultural educators and industry practitioners selected via stratified random sampling. The data are analyzed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses using SPSS and AMOS, to identify and validate the core competency constructs and their relationships within the proposed framework. The anticipated findings are the identification of a set of core sustainability-oriented competencies—encompassing environmental stewardship, resource management, technological adaptability, and socio-economic resilience—integrated into a multidimensional Competency Framework for Agricultural Education Pedagogies (CFAEP). The framework is expected to illustrate the interconnectedness between pedagogical practices, competency development, and sustainable agricultural outcomes. The study also aims to demonstrate that targeted pedagogical interventions, informed by the framework, significantly improve learners’ practical skills, ethical awareness, and problem-solving capabilities within sustainability contexts. This research contributes novel insights into the development of a contextually specific, dynamic competency framework that bridges gaps between pedagogical methods and sustainable agricultural practices. It extends existing theories by operationalizing the integration of competency development models with pedagogical strategies tailored to agricultural education. The framework provides a practical tool for curriculum developers, educators, and policymakers to design and implement sustainable curricula, fostering a transformation in agricultural education paradigms aligned with global sustainability agendas. The study concludes that embedding sustainability competencies into pedagogical practices enhances the overall quality and relevance of agricultural education. To operationalize the framework, the study recommends expanding professional development programs for educators, revising curricula to incorporate sustainability-focused modules, and establishing continuous assessment mechanisms aligned with the competency domains. It advocates for further longitudinal research to evaluate the impact of framework-driven pedagogy on agricultural sector performance and sustainability outcomes, thus contributing to the evolving body of knowledge on education for sustainable development in agriculture.
