Thesis Abstract
In the rapidly evolving landscape of agricultural development, the integration of digital literacy has emerged as a critical factor influencing the capacity of rural farming communities to enhance their agricultural productivity and sustainability. Despite the increasing proliferation of digital technologies in agriculture, limited empirical data exist on how digital literacy skills directly impact agricultural skill development among rural farmers, particularly within the context of developing countries. This study aims to assess the impact of digital literacy on agricultural skill development in rural farming communities, focusing on a representative sample of 350 farmers within the Green Valley district. The specific objectives include 1) determining the level of digital literacy among farmers; 2) evaluating the current state of agricultural skills; 3) examining the relationship between digital literacy and agricultural skill acquisition; and 4) identifying the socio-economic and infrastructural factors moderating this relationship. The study employs a descriptive cross-sectional research design, enabling comprehensive examination of the correlation between digital literacy and agricultural skills at a specific point in time. The research is guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Social Cognitive Theory, which provide theoretical frameworks for understanding how digital skills influence farming practices and learning behaviors. The population comprises registered farmers within the district, with stratified random sampling used to select a sample of 350 participants, ensuring representation across age, gender, education level, and farm size. Data collection instruments include a structured questionnaires measuring digital literacy levels, agricultural skill competence, and socio-economic variables, alongside focus group discussions and key informant interviews to contextualize quantitative findings. Validity and reliability of the instruments are confirmed through pilot testing, Content Validity Index (CVI), and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeding 0.80. Quantitative data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis to determine the strength and nature of the relationship between digital literacy and agricultural skills. Qualitative data from discussions and interviews will undergo thematic analysis, providing nuanced insights into contextual factors affecting digital adoption. The analytical framework combines both inferential and thematic methods to produce a comprehensive understanding of the phenomena. It is anticipated that the findings will reveal a positive and statistically significant relationship between digital literacy levels and agricultural skill development, with digital skills serving as a facilitator for adopting innovative farming techniques, accessing market information, and employing sustainable practices. The study expects to identify key socio-economic factors—such as education level, age, and infrastructure access—that moderate this relationship, offering critical insights for targeted interventions. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge by empirically validating the role of digital literacy as a catalyst for agricultural skill enhancement in rural settings, thereby bridging a significant gap in the literature focused on developing country contexts. It expands theoretical understanding of technology diffusion models within agricultural communities and provides evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, extension agents, and development practitioners seeking to design effective digital literacy programs tailored to rural farmers. The study concludes that initiatives aimed at improving digital literacy, coupled with infrastructural investments, substantially elevate the capacity of farmers to acquire and apply modern agricultural skills, ultimately leading to increased productivity and resilience. Recommendations include integrating digital literacy modules into agricultural extension services, enhancing rural ICT infrastructure, and promoting gender-inclusive digital training programs. Further research is suggested to explore longitudinal impacts of digital literacy initiatives on farm productivity and household income, as well as the potential of mobile-based platforms in scaling up digital skill dissemination among marginalized farmer populations.
Thesis Overview
This research examines how digital literacy influences the development of agricultural skills among farmers in rural communities. Digital literacy refers to the ability to effectively use digital devices, such as smartphones, computers, and the internet, which are increasingly important tools for modern farming. Many farmers in rural areas have limited digital skills, which can restrict their access to vital information on weather, market prices, new farming techniques, and government support programs. The study aims to understand whether improving digital literacy can lead to better agricultural practices and increased productivity among these farmers.
The research addresses a gap in knowledge because, while there are many studies on agricultural development, few have specifically explored the role that digital skills play in skill enhancement among rural farmers. This study will identify the extent of digital literacy levels and how these relate to specific agricultural skills like pest management, soil conservation, and crop selection.
The researcher will start by reviewing existing literature on digital literacy and agricultural development. Then, a survey will be conducted among a sample of approximately 300 farmers in the targeted rural community, selected through stratified random sampling to ensure diverse representation. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires that measure digital literacy levels, access to digital devices, and various agricultural skills. The study will also conduct focus group discussions to gather qualitative insights.
Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics to characterize the sample, correlation analysis to explore relationships between digital literacy and skills, and regression analysis to assess the impact of digital literacy on agricultural skill development. The findings are expected to show a positive link, suggesting that increased digital literacy can significantly improve farmers’ skills.
The contribution of this study lies in providing evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and development agencies on how digital literacy programs can be integrated into rural agricultural extension services. The expected outcome is that enhancing digital literacy will be identified as a key strategy for empowering farmers, improving productivity, and fostering sustainable agricultural practices.
