Thesis Abstract

Abstract
This thesis investigates the utilization of mobile technology to enhance agricultural extension services in rural communities. The primary objective of this study is to explore how mobile technology can be leveraged to improve the dissemination of agricultural information and extension services to farmers in remote areas. The research methodology employed a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative interviews with agricultural extension officers and quantitative surveys with farmers. The literature review revealed the potential benefits of using mobile technology in agricultural extension, highlighting its ability to increase access to information, improve communication between farmers and extension services, and enhance agricultural productivity. The findings from the study indicate that mobile technology can indeed play a crucial role in enhancing agricultural extension services in rural communities. However, challenges such as limited infrastructure, low digital literacy among farmers, and lack of tailored content were identified as barriers to effective implementation. Recommendations include the need for tailored training programs for farmers on mobile technology usage, the development of user-friendly agricultural applications, and collaboration between stakeholders to address infrastructure challenges. This research contributes to the existing literature by providing insights into the opportunities and challenges of utilizing mobile technology for agricultural extension services in rural communities. The study underscores the importance of leveraging technology to bridge the information gap and improve agricultural practices in remote areas, ultimately contributing to food security and rural development.

Thesis Overview

The project titled "Utilizing Mobile Technology for Enhancing Agricultural Extension Services in Rural Communities" aims to explore the potential of mobile technology in improving the delivery of agricultural extension services to rural communities. Agricultural extension services play a crucial role in disseminating information, knowledge, and skills to farmers, enabling them to adopt best practices and improve their agricultural productivity. However, traditional extension approaches face challenges such as limited reach, high operational costs, and lack of real-time feedback mechanisms. By leveraging mobile technology, this project seeks to address these challenges and enhance the effectiveness of agricultural extension services in rural communities. Mobile technology, including mobile phones, smartphones, and mobile applications, offers new opportunities to reach farmers in remote areas, provide timely and relevant information, and facilitate two-way communication between extension agents and farmers. The project will investigate how mobile technology can be integrated into existing extension programs to improve service delivery, increase farmer engagement, and ultimately enhance agricultural productivity and livelihoods in rural communities. Key components of the project will include developing and testing mobile-based extension tools and services, evaluating the impact of mobile technology on farmer knowledge and practices, and assessing the scalability and sustainability of mobile-enabled extension services. Through a combination of field surveys, interviews, and technology pilots, the project will gather data on the adoption and impact of mobile technology among farmers and extension agents. The research findings will contribute valuable insights into the design, implementation, and evaluation of mobile-enhanced agricultural extension programs, with implications for policy, practice, and future research in the field of agricultural extension and rural development. Overall, this project seeks to harness the potential of mobile technology to overcome the limitations of traditional extension approaches and create new opportunities for improving agricultural extension services in rural communities. By empowering farmers with access to timely and relevant information through mobile devices, the project aims to enhance their decision-making capabilities, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and contribute to food security and rural development goals.
