Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a vital staple crop in many tropical regions, providing a significant source of carbohydrates for millions of people. However, the production and processing of cassava face several challenges that hinder its efficiency and quality. This research project focuses on identifying and addressing some of the key problems encountered in the production and processing of cassava, as well as proposing practical solutions to improve the overall productivity and quality of cassava products. One of the primary issues in cassava production is the susceptibility of the crop to various pests and diseases, which can lead to significant yield losses if not properly managed. Additionally, poor soil fertility and inadequate agronomic practices can further impact the growth and productivity of cassava plants. In terms of processing, inefficient techniques and lack of proper infrastructure often result in post-harvest losses and reduced product quality. To mitigate these challenges, this study explores integrated pest management strategies to control pests and diseases in cassava production. It also investigates the use of improved agronomic practices, such as proper planting techniques and fertilizer application, to enhance soil fertility and boost cassava yields. Furthermore, the research delves into the development of efficient processing methods and technologies to minimize post-harvest losses and improve the quality of cassava products. Through a combination of field experiments, data analysis, and stakeholder consultations, this project aims to provide practical recommendations for cassava farmers, processors, and policymakers to enhance the sustainability and profitability of cassava production and processing systems. By addressing key challenges and implementing appropriate solutions, it is possible to increase the resilience of cassava cultivation against pests, diseases, and environmental stresses, thereby ensuring food security and economic stability for communities reliant on cassava as a staple crop. Overall, this research project contributes valuable insights into the problems faced in the production and processing of cassava and offers innovative solutions to overcome these challenges. By promoting sustainable practices and adopting modern technologies, the cassava value chain can be strengthened, leading to improved livelihoods and food security for millions of people who depend on this versatile crop.
