Thesis Abstract
The study addresses the persistent productivity gap among smallholder farmers in northern Uganda, where limited access to timely agricultural knowledge, farm management skills, and adaptive learning avenues constrains yield and income despite participation in market-oriented schemes. It investigates whether Farmer Field Schools (FFS) enhance productivity metrics, resilience, and decision-making capacity within the Gulu Organic Cooperative, Uganda, by examining learning spillovers, adoption of improved practices, and farm-level outcomes. The aim is to determine the extent to which FFS contribute to measurable productivity gains and to unpack the mechanisms through which experiential learning translates into farm performance. Specific objectives are (1) to assess changes in crop yield, input-use efficiency, and production costs among member farmers before and after FFS participation; (2) to evaluate changes in knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to integrated pest management, soil fertility management, and post-harvest handling; (3) to identify contextual factors that facilitate or constrain the effectiveness of FFS; (4) to test the mediating role of farmer networks and collective decision-making in productivity gains; and (5) to provide policy and organizational recommendations for scaling FFS within cooperative structures. The methodology adopts a convergent mixed-methods design, combining quantitative panel data with qualitative insights to triangulate findings. The population comprises 1,200 registered smallholder farmers within the Gulu Organic Cooperative across five sub-counties. A stratified random sample of 320 farmers who participated in at least one FFS cycle and 160 non-participants as a control group will be drawn, yielding a total sample of 480 respondents. Data collection instruments include structured household surveys capturing agronomic practices, input use, yields, and income; official cooperative records for plot-level productivity and input expenditures; and semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with extension agents, cooperative managers, and farmer leaders. Validity and reliability will be ensured through pilot testing, Cronbach’s alpha checks for scales, and triangulation with field observations. Quantitative analysis will employ descriptive statistics, paired and difference-in-differences (DiD) analyses to estimate treatment effects on productivity and efficiency, and multivariate regression models to identify determinants of yield changes; propensity score matching will address selection bias. The theoretical lens integrates the Diffusion of Innovations and Social Cognitive Theory to explain knowledge transfer, perceived self-efficacy, and learning-by-doing within FFS, augmented by the Theory of Planned Behavior to interpret changes in farmers’ intentions and practices. Expected findings anticipate a statistically significant increase in mean crop yields (estimated 12–18% over two cropping seasons) and improvements in input-use efficiency (output/input ratio rising by 9–14%) among FFS participants relative to non-participants, mediated by higher irrigation and timing of inputs, better pest management, and enhanced soil fertility practices. It is also anticipated that stronger farmer networks, retention of new knowledge, and higher perceived self-efficacy will explain part of the observed productivity gains. The study is expected to reveal contextual moderators such as access to irrigation, land tenure security, market access, and advancement of extension services that influence the magnitude of FFS benefits. A conceptual model illustrating the relationships among FFS participation, learning processes, behavioral change, and productivity outcomes will be refined. The contribution to knowledge includes empirical evidence on the causal impact of FFS within a cohesive cooperative structure in a post-conflict, low-resource setting, identifying the pathways through which experiential learning translates into measurable productive gains and outlining scalable organizational practices for extension delivery. The study informs policy on capacity-building investments, farmer-to-farmer learning cascades, and collaboration between NGOs, government extension services, and producer organizations. Practical recommendations focus on optimizing FFS curricula, strengthening monitoring and evaluation systems within cooperatives, and fostering inclusive participation to sustain productivity improvements beyond initial training cycles. The main conclusion is that well-structured Farmer Field Schools, embedded in a strong cooperative governance framework, can produce meaningful productivity gains for smallholders, provided that supportive infrastructure, ongoing mentorship, and enabling policy environments are in place. Recommendations include formalizing learning outcomes, integrating FFS with market-oriented extension services, and prioritizing scalable models that leverage peer learning and cooperative-driven extension.
Thesis Overview

Research will be conducted as a case study of the Gulu Organic Cooperative. A mixed-methods design will be used. The population includes all cooperative members and the extension staff serving the cooperative. A sample of 200 farmer-members will be selected using stratified random sampling by farm size and crop portfolio, with 20 extension staff interviewed. Data collection will involve structured household surveys to capture yields, inputs, costs, and income; focus group discussions to explore learning processes and group dynamics; and key informant interviews with cooperative leaders and extension agents. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests and regression analysis to identify factors associated with productivity changes, ANOVA to compare outcomes across subgroups, and thematic analysis for qualitative data. A difference-in-differences approach may be applied if historical data are available.
The expected outcome is that FFS participation within the cooperative is associated with higher yields, improved input use efficiency, and greater household income, with stronger effects for crops commonly covered in FFS modules. The study will guide policy and practice by outlining conditions for successful scale-up of FFS in similar cooperative contexts and recommending enhancements to training, facilitation, and market linkages.
