Abstract
This research project investigates the effects of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) on agricultural trade between small and large ECOWAS economies and the European Union (EU). The study focuses on understanding how these agreements impact agricultural trade flows between the ECOWAS countries, which vary in size, and the EU. The research aims to provide insights into the implications of EPAs on the agricultural sectors of both small and large economies within the ECOWAS region and their trade relations with the EU. The European Union has negotiated EPAs with various groups of countries, including those within the ECOWAS region, to promote trade and development. However, concerns have been raised about the potential unequal impacts of these agreements on countries with varying levels of economic development. Small economies may face challenges in competing with larger economies in the region and with the EU, which could affect their agricultural trade performance. By analyzing the agricultural trade patterns between small and large ECOWAS economies and the EU before and after the implementation of EPAs, this research seeks to identify any disparities in trade outcomes. The study will also explore the effects of tariff reductions, market access provisions, and other components of EPAs on agricultural trade dynamics. Understanding these effects is crucial for assessing the overall impact of EPAs on the agricultural sectors of both small and large economies in the ECOWAS region. The research methodology involves a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Trade data, tariff schedules, and other relevant information will be collected and analyzed to assess the changes in agricultural trade patterns following the implementation of EPAs. Interviews with stakeholders, including government officials, industry representatives, and experts, will also be conducted to gather insights on the practical implications of these agreements on agricultural trade. The findings of this research will contribute to the existing literature on trade agreements and agricultural development in the ECOWAS region. By shedding light on the effects of EPAs on agricultural trade between small and large economies in the region and the EU, this study aims to provide valuable information for policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in promoting sustainable agricultural trade relations within the ECOWAS region.
