Thesis Abstract
Smallholder farmers in developing regions often face significant barriers to accessing timely, relevant, and effective agricultural advice, which hampers productivity and sustainable development. Traditional extension approaches, typically delivered by government agencies or NGOs, have shown limitations in reach and community acceptance, necessitating innovative strategies that leverage local social structures and peer influence. This study aims to design, implement, and evaluate a peer-led agricultural extension program tailored for smallholder farmers to enhance their adoption of improved farming practices and increase productivity. Specific objectives include identifying key peer role models within smallholder communities, developing a participatory extension curriculum, training peer extension agents, and assessing the program’s impact on farmers’ knowledge, practices, and yields. Employing a mixed-methods research design, the study integrated qualitative and quantitative approaches to provide a comprehensive evaluation. The quantitative component involved a quasi-experimental design with a sample of 200 smallholder farmers, randomly assigned to treatment and control groups, selected through stratified random sampling from two comparable districts. Data collection instruments comprised structured questionnaires, focus group discussion guides, and field observation checklists. The questionnaires measured farmers’ knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP), while yield data were obtained through direct measurement of crop outputs.
