Abstract
This study aimed to assess the role of agricultural extension workers in enhancing farmers' yields in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The agricultural sector is vital for the economic development of Nigeria, and agricultural extension services play a crucial role in disseminating agricultural information and best practices to farmers. However, there have been concerns about the effectiveness of extension workers in improving farmers' yields in the study area. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather data from agricultural extension workers and farmers in Chikun Local Government Area. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while thematic analysis was used for the qualitative data. The findings revealed that agricultural extension workers in Chikun Local Government Area faced several challenges that hindered their effectiveness in enhancing farmers' yields. These challenges included inadequate training, lack of resources, poor infrastructure, and limited access to technology. Despite these challenges, extension workers were found to play a critical role in disseminating knowledge on modern agricultural techniques, crop management practices, and pest control measures to farmers. Furthermore, the study found that farmers who received regular visits and support from extension workers tended to have higher yields compared to those who did not receive such support. Extension workers were also instrumental in linking farmers to input suppliers, financial institutions, and markets, thereby improving farmers' access to essential resources and increasing their profitability. Based on the findings, the study recommends investing in continuous training and capacity building for agricultural extension workers to improve their knowledge and skills. Additionally, there is a need to provide extension workers with the necessary resources, including vehicles, smartphones, and internet connectivity, to enhance their outreach and communication with farmers. Strengthening collaboration between extension workers, research institutions, and agro-input suppliers is also crucial for promoting the adoption of modern agricultural practices among farmers. Overall, this study underscores the importance of agricultural extension services in improving farmers' yields and recommends strategic interventions to address the challenges faced by extension workers in Chikun Local Government Area. By enhancing the capacity and support systems for extension workers, the agricultural sector in the study area can achieve sustainable growth and contribute significantly to food security and economic development.
