Thesis Abstract

The adoption of organic farming practices among smallholder farmers has garnered increasing attention as a sustainable approach to enhance agricultural productivity and community livelihoods, particularly in riverine environments where traditional farming faces ecological and economic challenges. Despite anecdotal evidence suggesting potential benefits, limited empirical research exists on the actual socio-economic impacts of organic farming on smallholder communities in such unique ecological zones. This study aims to evaluate the impact of organic farming practices on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers within Riverside Community, with specific objectives of assessing the economic benefits, socio-cultural implications, and environmental sustainability associated with organic methods, as well as identifying contextual factors influencing adoption and success. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the phenomena. The target population comprised all smallholder farmers within Riverside Community engaged in either organic or conventional farming practices, totaling approximately 350 farmers based on recent census data. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 150 farmers, proportionally representing organic practitioners and non-organic farmers to facilitate comparative analysis. Data collection instruments included structured questionnaires assessing socio-economic variables, farm productivity, income levels, access to markets, and perceptions of organic farming; semi-structured interview guides exploring socio-cultural and environmental insights; and focus group discussion prompts to validate community perspectives. To ensure validity and reliability, questionnaires were pre-tested on a subset of 20 farmers outside the main study area, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients exceeded the acceptable threshold of 0.7 for all scales. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and multiple regression analysis to identify determinants of livelihood outcomes, with the theoretical framework anchored on the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework and the Diffusion of Innovations Theory to elucidate factors influencing adoption behaviors. Qualitative data from interviews and focus groups underwent thematic analysis using NVivo software to extract recurrent themes related to socio-cultural dynamics and environmental perceptions associated with organic farming. Key anticipated findings include statistically significant improvements in household income and food security among organic farmers compared to their conventional counterparts, with organic practices contributing positively to soil health, biodiversity, and water quality as perceived by community members. Regression analysis is expected to reveal that variables such as access to extension services, market accessibility, and farmers’ perceptions of benefits are significant predictors of organic farming adoption. Qualitative insights are expected to highlight socio-cultural acceptance, perceived environmental benefits, and perceived barriers like certification costs and knowledge gaps as critical factors influencing livelihood outcomes. This study contributes to knowledge by providing empirically grounded evidence on the socio-economic and environmental impacts of organic farming in a riverine context, thus filling existing literature gaps that predominantly focus on arid or coastal zones. The findings will inform policy on promoting sustainable agricultural practices and livelihood diversification among smallholder farmers in similar ecological zones. The research concludes with recommendations for enhancing extension services, subsidizing certification costs, developing community-based organic certification schemes, and fostering awareness campaigns tailored to local socio-cultural contexts. Ultimately, the study advocates for integrating organic farming into rural development strategies as a viable pathway to sustainable livelihoods and ecological conservation in riverine communities.

Qualitative data will also be gathered through focused interviews and community discussions to gain deeper insights into farmers’ experiences. Data validity and reliability will be ensured through pilot testing and triangulation. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics and inferential techniques such as regression analysis to identify relationships between organic practices and livelihood indicators. Thematic analysis will be used to interpret qualitative responses. The study aims to uncover whether organic practices lead to significant improvements in income, health, and sustainability for farmers. The study’s contribution will be in providing empirical evidence on the socio-economic impacts of organic farming at a community level, informing policymakers and development agencies about the benefits and challenges of promoting organic agriculture among smallholders. The expected outcome is that organic farming positively influences livelihoods, and the findings will recommend strategies to support smallholder farmers in adopting sustainable agricultural practices more effectively.
