Abstract
This research project aims to analyze the effects of Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) on agricultural trade between small and large ECOWAS economies and the European Union (EU). EPAs are trade agreements between the EU and African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries that aim to promote trade and development. However, there is limited research on how these agreements specifically impact agricultural trade between small and large economies within the ECOWAS region and the EU. The study will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of trade data with qualitative assessments of policy implications and stakeholder perspectives. By focusing on agricultural trade, the research seeks to understand how EPAs influence market access, trade liberalization, and economic development in the agricultural sectors of both small and large ECOWAS economies. Specific objectives of the research include evaluating the impact of EPAs on market access for agricultural products from small ECOWAS economies in the EU market, assessing the effects of trade liberalization on the competitiveness of agricultural sectors in both small and large ECOWAS economies, and analyzing the implications of EPAs on agricultural development and food security in the region. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on international trade agreements and their impact on agricultural sectors in developing countries. By focusing on the ECOWAS region, the research will provide insights into the specific dynamics of trade relations between small and large economies within a regional bloc and their interactions with a major trading partner like the EU. The implications of this research are significant for policymakers, trade negotiators, and stakeholders involved in agricultural trade within the ECOWAS region and the EU.
