Smallholder farmers represent a vital component of agricultural economies, yet their income levels and productivity outcomes vary significantly depending on the farming practices they adopt. This study investigates the comparative analysis of income and productivity between smallholder farmers engaged in organic versus conventional agriculture within a semi-arid agricultural region. The research aims to generate empirical evidence on how different farming systems influence economic livelihoods and production efficiency, thereby contributing to policy and practice debates on sustainable development and agricultural transformation. Specific objectives include to assess the income levels of smallholder farmers practicing organic and conventional farming; to compare productivity metrics such as crop yield and input use efficiency; to identify socio-economic and institutional factors influencing farmers’ choice of farming system; and to analyze the relationship between farming practices and economic outcomes. The study employs a cross-sectional research design within a quantitative paradigm, guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Sustainable Agriculture Framework to understand behavioral and sustainability factors influencing farmers’ decision-making processes. The target population comprises smallholder farmers in the region, with a total sampling frame of approximately 2,500 farmers. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 400 farmers, proportionally divided between those practicing organic farming and those practicing conventional methods, ensuring representation across different farm sizes and socio-economic statuses. This research significantly contributes to the body of knowledge by providing rigorous empirical evidence on the economic and productivity implications of organic versus conventional farming among smallholders, filling existing gaps in region-specific data and comparative analyses. It highlights policy opportunities for promoting sustainable intensification, enhancing market access, and designing supportive extension programs that accommodate the needs and constraints of smallholder farmers. The main conclusion underscores the potential of organic agriculture as a viable pathway to improve smallholder livelihoods, especially where market premiums and environmental benefits align with farmers’ capacity and knowledge. Based on these findings, recommendations include strengthening extension services focused on organic practices, improving market infrastructure, and developing certification schemes that lower barriers for smallholders. Further research is suggested to examine longitudinal impacts of farming system shifts, explore environmental outcomes, and evaluate consumer preferences for organic products. Overall, this study advances understanding of how sustainable agricultural practices influence economic well-being at the smallholder level and offers actionable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers committed to transforming smallholder agriculture toward sustainability.
