Thesis Abstract

The proliferation of mobile financial services (MFS) has transformed financial inclusion among smallholder farmers in developing regions, yet empirical evidence on their influence on farm investment decisions remains limited. This study aims to assess the impact of mobile financial services on smallholder farm investment behaviors, focusing on factors that enhance or hinder such investments, with the broader goal of informing policies to foster sustainable agricultural growth. The specific objectives include identifying the extent of MFS usage among smallholders, evaluating how mobile financial transactions influence investment choices, determining demographic and socioeconomic factors that mediate this relationship, and analyzing the role of perceived financial security and access to credit facilitated by MFS in shaping investment decisions. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques. The quantitative phase employs a cross-sectional survey design, targeting a population of smallholder farmers within the Central Grain Belt region, with a total population estimate of approximately 15,000 smallholders. A stratified random sampling technique is used to select a sample size of 600 smallholder farmers, ensuring proportional representation across gender, farm size, and access to mobile technologies. Data collection instruments include structured questionnaires validated through pre-testing and reliability analysis (Cronbach’s alpha scores above 0.8), complemented by focus group discussions and key informant interviews to deepen understanding of contextual influences. Quantitative data are analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis to examine the relationship between MFS usage and investment decisions, controlling for relevant socioeconomic variables such as age, education level, farm size, and income levels. The model specification builds upon the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Technology Acceptance Model, adapted to the agricultural finance context, to hypothesize that increased MFS usage positively influences investment behaviors through perceived ease of use and perceived financial security. The qualitative data are subjected to thematic content analysis to extract patterns and insights on farmer perceptions, experiences, and barriers related to mobile financial services. Preliminary expected findings suggest a significant positive correlation between mobile financial service usage and smallholder investment in inputs, farm equipment, and diversification of crops. It is anticipated that factors such as higher education levels, greater mobile phone literacy, and access to credit linked to mobile transactions will mediate this relationship. These findings will contribute novel insights into the mechanisms through which mobile financial services influence investment decisions, addressing existing gaps in the literature concerning the role of ICTs in rural agricultural finance. The study’s main contribution lies in advancing theoretical understanding of the behavioral and technological factors influencing smallholder investment decisions, grounded in the integration of behavioral theory with technology adoption frameworks. Practically, the findings will inform policymakers and financial service providers on strategies to improve mobile financial service outreach and functionality, particularly targeting marginalized smallholders. The study concludes that expanding mobile financial infrastructure and literacy is essential to promoting strategic investments among smallholder farmers, thereby enhancing productivity and rural livelihoods. Based on the findings, recommendations include developing targeted financial literacy programs, promoting affordable access to credit via mobile platforms, and tailoring mobile financial products to meet smallholders’ specific needs. Future research directions suggest exploring longitudinal impacts of MFS adoption on farm productivity and household income, as well as comparative studies across different agro-ecological zones to generalize findings regionally. Overall, this research emphasizes the critical role of mobile financial services as catalysts for agricultural investment and rural development in developing economies.
