Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The qualification of Home Economics teachers plays a critical role in shaping the performance of secondary school students in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). This research project focuses on investigating the impact of the qualification of Home Economics teachers on the academic performance of students in selected secondary schools in Calabar. The study utilizes a case study approach to gather data from a sample of schools in the region. The research aims to explore how the educational background, training, and experience of Home Economics teachers influence the learning outcomes of students in WASSCE examinations. By conducting interviews, surveys, and analyzing academic records, this study seeks to uncover correlations between teacher qualifications and student performance levels. The findings from this research are expected to provide valuable insights into the importance of having qualified Home Economics teachers in secondary schools. It is anticipated that teachers with higher qualifications, specialized training in Home Economics, and relevant experience will have a positive impact on students' academic achievements. These teachers are likely to possess the necessary subject knowledge, pedagogical skills, and instructional strategies to effectively engage students and enhance their learning outcomes. Furthermore, this study aims to identify any existing gaps in teacher qualifications and make recommendations for improving the quality of Home Economics education in secondary schools. By understanding the relationship between teacher qualifications and student performance, policymakers, school administrators, and teacher training institutions can develop targeted interventions to enhance the overall quality of Home Economics education. Overall, this research project provides a comprehensive analysis of the impact of Home Economics teacher qualifications on the performance of secondary school students in WASSCE examinations. The findings will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on teacher quality and student outcomes, particularly in the context of Home Economics education. By shedding light on this important relationship, this study aims to support efforts to improve the quality of education and enhance the academic achievements of students in secondary schools in Calabar.
