Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Yam production faces various challenges globally, affecting its prospects for meeting the increasing demand for this staple crop. This research project aims to analyze the problems and prospects of yam production in different regions to provide insights for sustainable improvement strategies. The study will focus on key issues such as pest and disease management, climate change impacts, post-harvest losses, lack of modern farming technologies, and access to market opportunities. By conducting field surveys and interviews with yam farmers, agricultural experts, and policymakers, the research will gather data on the specific challenges faced by yam producers. Pest and disease management is a critical aspect affecting yam production, with nematodes, yam anthracnose, and yam mosaic virus being major threats. Climate change has also led to unpredictable weather patterns, affecting yam cultivation and yields. Post-harvest losses in yam production are significant due to improper storage facilities and transportation challenges. Additionally, the lack of modern farming technologies and practices hinders productivity and efficiency in yam cultivation. Farmers' limited access to credit, extension services, and markets further constrain the growth of the yam sector. Despite these challenges, yam production holds promising prospects for enhancing food security, income generation, and rural development. The research will explore potential opportunities for improving yam production, such as implementing integrated pest management strategies, promoting climate-smart agricultural practices, and enhancing post-harvest technologies. Furthermore, the study will investigate the benefits of adopting modern farming techniques, including mechanization, irrigation systems, and improved seed varieties, to increase yam yields and quality. Enhancing farmers' access to credit, training, and market linkages will also be crucial for fostering a sustainable yam production system. Overall, this research project seeks to provide valuable insights into the problems and prospects of yam production, aiming to inform policymakers, agricultural stakeholders, and development agencies on effective strategies for enhancing the sustainability and profitability of yam farming. By addressing the challenges and leveraging potential opportunities in yam production, the study aims to contribute to improving livelihoods, food security, and agricultural sustainability in yam-producing regions.
