Thesis Abstract
Urbanization has significantly transformed natural habitats, compelling bird populations to adapt their foraging strategies to fluctuating environmental conditions. This study aims to conduct a comparative analysis of foraging behaviors in urban and rural bird populations, focusing on identifying the ecological, behavioral, and physiological adaptations that facilitate survival across these contrasting environments. The specific objectives include quantifying differences in foraging techniques, examining the influence of habitat structure on resource utilization, and evaluating the role of energy expenditure and nutritional intake in shaping foraging strategies among selected bird species. Employing a cross-sectional research design, the study was conducted across two distinct settings an urban park in the city center with approximately 50 hectares of green space and a rural woodland area covering 200 hectares, situated 50 kilometers from the urban site. The target population comprised common urban-adapted bird species, such as Passer domesticus (house sparrow), Turdus merula (common blackbird), and Columba livia (rock pigeon). A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 150 individual birds—75 from each environment—ensuring adequate representation of each species and minimizing sampling bias. Data collection integrated direct behavioral observations via binocular and video recordings, use of GPS trackers for movement patterns, and physiological assessments conducted through non-invasive feather and blood sampling to measure energetic and nutritional markers. The collected data were analyzed using a combination of descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), and generalized linear models to assess differences in foraging behavior and resource use. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to identify underlying patterns in behavioral traits, while regression analyses evaluated associations between habitat variables and foraging success. The theoretical foundation incorporates Optimal Foraging Theory (MacArthur and Pianka, 1966), which predicts that animals maximize energy intake per unit effort, and the Habitat Selection Theory, to understand environmental influence on foraging choices. Conversely, rural birds are expected to rely predominantly on natural food sources, employing more energetically costly search tactics like foraging on the ground and in foliage. Physiological analyses are projected to reveal differences in energy reserves and stress levels correlating with habitat type. This research advances understanding of behavioral plasticity and ecological adaptation in avian species amid rapid urban expansion, filling existing knowledge gaps concerning resource partitioning and energetic trade-offs in different landscapes. It contributes to the broader theoretical framework of urban ecology, providing empirical evidence for models of behavioral adaptation and habitat-specific survival strategies. The findings have practical implications for urban planning and biodiversity conservation, emphasizing the importance of habitat heterogeneity and resource availability in maintaining avian diversity. In conclusion, the study recommends that urban habitat management incorporate features that support diverse foraging niches, thereby enhancing the resilience of bird populations in increasingly anthropogenic landscapes. Further research should explore long-term fitness consequences of differing foraging strategies and extend analysis to include additional species and urban gradients, to develop comprehensive conservation strategies tailored to rapidly changing environments.
