Thesis Abstract

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of probiotics in managing gastrointestinal disorders in dogs. Gastrointestinal disorders are common in dogs and can lead to various health issues if not properly managed. Probiotics have gained attention in veterinary medicine as a potential therapeutic option for managing gastrointestinal disorders due to their ability to modulate the gut microbiota and improve digestive health. This research project aimed to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics in alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms and improving overall health outcomes in dogs with gastrointestinal disorders. The study design included a randomized controlled trial involving dogs diagnosed with various gastrointestinal disorders. The dogs were divided into two groups one receiving probiotics as part of their treatment regimen, and the other receiving a placebo. Clinical parameters such as stool quality, frequency of vomiting, appetite, and overall well-being were monitored throughout the study period. Additionally, fecal samples were collected to assess changes in the gut microbiota composition following probiotic supplementation. The results of the study revealed a significant improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms in dogs receiving probiotics compared to those in the control group. Dogs supplemented with probiotics showed a decrease in the frequency of vomiting, improved stool quality, and increased appetite. Furthermore, analysis of fecal samples demonstrated a favorable shift in the gut microbiota composition towards a more balanced and diverse microbial community in the probiotic group. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the potential benefits of probiotics in managing gastrointestinal disorders in dogs. The findings suggest that probiotic supplementation can be an effective and safe adjunct therapy for improving digestive health and overall well-being in dogs with gastrointestinal issues. Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of probiotics and optimize their use in veterinary practice. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the use of probiotics as a promising treatment option for gastrointestinal disorders in dogs.
