Thesis Abstract

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative joint disease affecting both humans and animals, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. In companion animals, particularly dogs and horses, OA can significantly impact their quality of life. Traditional treatments for OA are often palliative and do not address the underlying cause of the disease. Stem cell therapy has emerged as a promising regenerative medicine approach for treating OA by promoting tissue repair and reducing inflammation. This thesis aims to explore the effectiveness of stem cell therapy in treating OA in companion animals. The study begins with an introduction outlining the significance of OA in companion animals and the limitations of current treatment options. The background of the study provides a comprehensive overview of OA pathophysiology and the potential benefits of stem cell therapy in regenerating damaged joint tissues. The problem statement highlights the need for more effective and long-lasting treatment modalities for OA in companion animals. The objectives of the study include evaluating the efficacy of stem cell therapy in reducing pain and improving joint function in companion animals with OA. The scope of the study encompasses both clinical and laboratory research, focusing on the use of mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue or bone marrow. The literature review explores existing research on stem cell therapy for OA in veterinary medicine, including studies on cell sources, delivery methods, and treatment outcomes. Key topics include the immunomodulatory properties of stem cells, mechanisms of tissue repair, and the role of inflammation in OA progression. The research methodology section details the experimental design, sample selection criteria, stem cell isolation and characterization methods, treatment protocols, and outcome measures. The study incorporates both in vitro and in vivo experiments to assess the therapeutic potential of stem cell therapy in a preclinical animal model of OA. The discussion of findings analyzes the results of the study, comparing the effectiveness of stem cell therapy with conventional treatments for OA. Key findings include improvements in lameness scores, joint range of motion, and histological evidence of tissue regeneration following stem cell administration. In conclusion, this thesis provides valuable insights into the potential of stem cell therapy as a novel treatment modality for OA in companion animals. The study highlights the regenerative capacity of stem cells and their ability to modulate the inflammatory response in arthritic joints. Future research directions may focus on optimizing stem cell delivery methods, dosing regimens, and long-term outcomes in clinical settings. Keywords osteoarthritis, stem cell therapy, companion animals, regenerative medicine, joint disease, mesenchymal stem cells
