Thesis Abstract
Abstract
The influence of Hollywood films on the moral values of youths has been a topic of significant debate and concern in society. This research project aims to investigate the extent to which Hollywood films impact the moral values of young people. The study will explore how exposure to certain themes, behaviors, and ideologies portrayed in Hollywood films can shape the moral compass of youths. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a diverse sample of youths. The quantitative surveys will assess the frequency of film consumption, the types of movies watched, and the perceived influence of these films on the moral values of the participants. On the other hand, qualitative interviews will provide in-depth insights into how specific Hollywood films have affected the moral beliefs and behaviors of the youths. The study will also examine the role of parental guidance and media literacy in mitigating the potential negative effects of Hollywood films on the moral development of young individuals. By understanding the perspectives of both youths and their parents, the research aims to identify strategies for promoting critical thinking and ethical decision-making when engaging with media content. Furthermore, the project will analyze the portrayal of morality in Hollywood films, including the depiction of ethical dilemmas, heroism, and consequences of actions. By critically evaluating the messages conveyed in popular movies, the research seeks to highlight the potential discrepancies between on-screen narratives and real-life moral principles. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing literature on media influence and moral development among youths. By shedding light on the impact of Hollywood films on the moral values of young people, the research aims to raise awareness among parents, educators, and policymakers about the importance of media literacy education and responsible media consumption. In conclusion, this research project will provide valuable insights into the complex relationship between Hollywood films and the moral values of youths. By examining the mechanisms through which films influence moral development and exploring potential mitigating factors, the study seeks to empower young individuals to navigate the media landscape critically and uphold their ethical principles.
Thesis Overview

1.1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The mass media exert great persuasive effects on the thoughts and behaviors, by encouraging people into new lifestyle patterns, fashion, etc. Among all media, films play a major role in affecting the thinking pattern of the society (Evra, 1990).

Films also referred to as motion pictures, involves projecting a series of images into the screen to create an illusion of motion. It is one of the most popular forms of entertainment, enabling people to immerse in an imaginary world for a short period (Olaleye, 2007).

In recent times, subtitles that translate different languages have increased appeal of films, especially those from foreign cultures. Subtitles give the audience the opportunity to watch films that were not produced in their primary language. This innovation therefore created room for rapid spread of films from their country of origin to other countries, in which Nigeria is not an exception. Today in Nigeria, films made in Hollywood USA, France, India, China, etc. are always in high demand.

Our present Nigeria society now has a Europeanized look. Our youths now strive to talk, walk, behave, eat, and dress exactly like characters in foreign films, to the detriment and abandonment of our indigenous cultures.
